I'm starting to get a little more into trying to understand carburetor stuff. What I am wanting to know is which way to adjust the floats? If I am understanding right I need to lower the floats so less fuel is in the bowls so that it won't "spill over" at steep angles. Is this correct. I know I can't go to low because it could starve the carb, right? My background is:
78 Cherokee chief
360
Edelbrock performer (non egr)intake and cam
Carter AFB 625 cfm
The above is new and the motor is recently rebuilt.

I am not having any problems with it running, I am just wanting to get it a little better off-road. I understand the limitations of the carb at steep angles, I am just trying to get it as good as I can.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes, you are right. When you bought the carb it comes with an adjustment guide that shows you the correct measurements that you need. If it didn't you can go to Edelbrock (http://www.edelbrock.com) and they should have the specs that you need. Also you should consider installing the off-raod kit. I paid about $7 for it at Checkers.

Here try this site Float Adjustment (http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_sect2.html#float).

I would recommend getting off road needle and seats for that Carter. Edelbrock's performer carbs are Carter designs so their part number 1465 will work in the Carter 625. They do in mine anway...

I don't know exactly how well the 625 does in off camber situations but I do know that people who have the Edelbrock versions can handle steep angles pretty well. Since it's really just a rehashed Carter, I imagine the Carter does the same.

The only problem comes when you point the nose up in the air. That's where the spring loaded needle and seats come in. They keep the float open enough to get some fuel into the bowl.
