#1 how does the front output shaft barring come out from front or do you have to break the smile.gif case down?
#2 is there a easy / low cost swap for the 219 to something else?
NP229 should swap right in. Maybe just have to swap in the shift contoller. Gives you 2 wheel drive as an option also.
what wrong with your case??

229 will bolt up to trans ( same splines) and all drive shafts will work too?
I know it will bolt up. Same offset and same sized case so you should be a go.
The only difference is that the 229 came with a vaccuum disconnect front axle (only in 83-84)...so the axle wasn't "live" when the tcase wasn't in 4wh. Just pull a xfer case from 85 or later(no vac. axle) and you should be set.

The 2 wheel drive/4 wheel drive shifting in the 229 was accomplished with a vacuum switch. You'll need to get that, mount it and route vacuum to it.

Is the vacum switch on 229 the same as the one in my 79 wag quadratrack
NO!
how many wags do you have??
NP219 wasn't an option in 1979. QT was the ONLY option for Auto Trans then.

The control diaphragms on the cases themselves, however, are completely different and not interchangeable.

Does anyone know if the trans shaft splines are the same.
I pulled the 219 last night it sounds real bad on the inside I don't think it just a barring so I'm going to get a 229 tomorrow or Sat.
I like to be sure on what I'm doing, I just don't have alot of time to wast they are calling for snow Sunday.
And I like to get the right Tcase and parts to make it work.
so far I beleive I need a 229 85 year & up vacum switch and vac lines.
so the 219 is on the 80 Cheif right??
If so...you're correct on what you need. Though...I suspect it's probably just the chain in the case which is fairly easy to fix. But....a bolt in 229 is not a bad idea either.
Splines 80 and up (TF727, or TF998) should be the same.
