I was under the hood replacing the fuel filter. The truck was cool as it hadn't been driven for several hours. I accidentally touched the bracket for the TFI coil and got a nice zap! What gives? Anything I should check for?

My coil bracket did that after I did TFI.I ran a small ground wire from the bracket to the intake.I believe it may be static discharge. Also make sure you don't have any bare wires and all your plug wires are seated properly.

Why would you have to ground it, isn't it already grounded because the bracket is metal and it's connected to the intake?
I'm afraid to touch mine now. I'm going to trick someone else into touching it to see if it shocks them.

Mine actually popped me the other night. I was adjusting the timing after installing a new dizzy, didn't realize key was on and left hand and wrench was on coil or darned close to it when I turned the dizzy. Man that hurts. I'm gonna get me one of those snowmobile chains that cause the snowmobile to turn off if you fall off so when I'm not in the cab the keys are definately out of the ignition.

I have been jolted after working of the truck when I was touching the chasis and my hand strayed over a point with positive voltage. I thought the coil was not supposed to have juice to it with the key off. I guess it is always possible it was some kind of latent discharge from the coils build up of potential energy. Or maybe you did someone wring and it was karma biting you in the hand.
be careful out there,

Sounds like a bad ground to me - clean the base of the bracket and the intake connection with a scraper and re-attach. It will probably run better also.

Anyone happen to know where a ground strap goes on a '88 GW? Or if they even have one? Can't find one on my rig.

Engine to frame, under motor mount
I'm gonna get me one of those snowmobile chains that cause the snowmobile to turn off if you fall off so when I'm not in the cab the keys are definately out of the ignition. This will also help if you fall out of thew wag!! It won't run away! :D
