1)WHY???
2)Yes, but you need the I-6 frame mount for the left (driver's) side. (On CJs, anyhow. On SJs, I'm not sure...anyone?)
3)It's a TH400. And yes, but you need the I-6 flexplate.

If you have a GOOD six and a donor vehicle for claiming mounts and so on, it sounds good to me. Several guys here are of the theory that with the six you are less likely to break stuff. Sounds good eh. Anyway, good luck.

depends on your needs-if you want it to be FAST,then youll not want the six,but if you want to abuse the hell out of it and not worry about it grenading itself, its a good idea.

my six turns 38s with stock 3.31 gears, and ive had it so hot several times that it wouldnt crank, and the water turrned to steam as soon as you poured it in-one time even blowing the top tank in the radiator in half.i constantly have it running on its side or staight up and down,no oil around the pick up,light glowing brightly.its been on fire(before i got it) and been completely under water. it now has so much blow by that the smoke just billows out of the little breather tube i ran over to the fenderwell.its lucky to have 20 lbs hot oil pressure at 2000 rpm,but it still runs good, that sucker just will not die.

i am 100% sure if i were running a SCB,or an amc v8(or anything other than an inline six) that id prolly be on my 2nd or 3rd one. i just dont think an amc or chevy v8 would put up with all the crap i put mine thru.

both frame brackets are different. the six is balanced different than the v8 so youll need a 6 cyl flexplate.the only other thing to mention is that the six tucks back further into the firewall,so it will move the tranny and xfer back-meaning longer fornt shaft, shorter rear. if you get a 6 cyl/th400 donor truck to also use the drivehafts out of,your job will be quite a bit easier.

there is another guy here running a built 258 with a th400/QT hopefully heel show up and give you some more specifics.

Scotty, you say that it would be easier to use a th400 doner, to get the shafts, but what if I don't have a doner truck, what are my options, I believe to be honest with you the 258 came out of an Eagle car of some kind, I have the flexplate, mounts are going to be tricky, but I think I can manufacture some, or get some from J&W Jeep, but the shaft thing is killing me. What do you mean it sits further in the firwall? I don't see how it can, help......

The driveshafts should be the same right? I could be wrong since there are 2 sets of holes to move the crossmember but isnt that for changing auto to manual trans? If all else fails get a big sledgehammer and start pounding that firewall http://cgi.tripod.com/smilecwm/cgi-bin/s/net/biggrin.gif .

didnt mean to confuse you-the 360 simply sits further forward in the engine compt.prolly a good 8 inches at least.the 360 with auto trans crossmember bolts in the first set of holes, the six is longer, and therfore the back of the valve cover is only about an inch or so from the firewall.youll have to move the crossmember back to the second set of holes.no firewall persuasion will be nessessary.all you really need is the frame brackets and the engine brackets from an aftermarket source or a donor truck. the eagle engine bracket is very different.id highly reccommend getting factory pieces to get everything in the right spot and save you alot of fabrication headaches. the rubbermounts are available from the 'Zone for 5.99 or 12.99,depend on which ones you get.

the driveshaft thing is no big deal.if you dont have a donor truck to take them from, youll just need to take your old ones to a driveshaft shop and have the rear shortened and the front lengthened, after you have the engine/tranny/xfer bolted in and know what lengths they will need to be.they will be different, because the tranny and xfer case length doesnt change, and the tranny/xfer will sit further forward with the v8.im sure youll see the difference if you can look at a 6 cyl truck.if you bolted in the 6 cyl with the rear of the block in the same spot as the rear of the block on a v8 truck, the fan would be alittle past your radiator! the extra length of the 6 makes it sit further back in the engine compt.

last and not least, your auto flexplate is no good-the eagle was equipped with a 904 variant(998 or 999) and wont bolt to the th400 convertor.youll need to obtain a factory 6 cyl th400 flexplate.
