i have a friend with a '85 wagoneer
that has a tourque flight 727 auto and
he is running 35" tires he has ordered 4.56
gears is that too much gear for an auto tranny?

It would be comparable to 3.55 gears and 235/75 tires.

Its a good gear if you are going for mainly offroad

In 1976, standard equipment on the J20 with the 258 six cylinder was T18 trans, D20, 4.88 axle ratio, and 8.00x16.5 tires. (7.50x16 tires on shortbed). Talk about low end torque.

Looks like the last year for that combo, BTW. No J-20 with a 258 in 1977 according to the FSM. The column for 4.88s was still in the specs, but none of the vehicles were available with it.
