I have an 81 Wagoneer, Quadtrac, 258-6, 727 tranny and a NP219 tranfer case - a vehicle with a long history of troubles - now it seems my transfer case is getting a noise in it. A sort of clicking type sound that I can feel in the lever. It also changes the sound a bit if I push down or pull up on the lever. Now of course some wide open questions? What might it be? And what kind of expenses would I be looking at? I can pull the case out myself (have done before for tranny work). I hear the chain gets bad - could that be it or what else????? Thanks for any help.

Check the fluid. Check the axles and u-joints. My 229 went, i got a known good used unit for under a buck and stuck it in. Works fine.
If it was the chain, it would make a popping sound. Sounds like a lube prollem to me. My vote is for Ernzo.

I recently replaced my tranny (727 w/lockup) and today on the first long run (more than 5 miles) the tranny would not shift into 3rd after it had already been running in 3rd down the highway. I was turned around to come back home and tried to get it to shift into 3rd as it normally has to be above 45 to shift and it did not shift until 65mph and after that it was fine the rest of the way home. after I got into town, the tranny was OK but on my last turn the drivetrain bound up and started to pop and then was ok until i parked. Once parked, I pulled the cover and looked at the driveshaft as I shifted from Drive to N to Reverse and back and the front shaft was "jumping" when I shifted. Could this looseness cause the t-case to bind and could the new tranny have excellerated the problem as the previous tranny was slipping so badly? Since I do not have a history of the vehicle other than the word of the previous owner, do I check the chain (how?) and repalce if needed (where do I get one without getting taken?) and replace the front u-joints (i believe they are shot!), adjust the tranny bands and hope for the best!...or just sell the parts and hope to recoup!

I have a 219 in my parts rig....I assume it works, but who knows. I could be persuaded to part with it. smile.gif

If your 219 DOES work...how much "persuading" would it take?

Sorry, I forget sometimes what posts I responded to. smile.gif First, let me see how it looks....then well talk. I dragged the parts jeep in when I got it, but the previous owner did tell me it was driven to it's last resting place, so who knows. I'll try to be quick about this, but if you are in a real hurry (like for your daily driver) you may want to speak with Crazy Jeepman....I'm sure he's got one around his place.

In response to the original thread...as mentioned above start with checking the fluid level and the condition of it. If in doubt change it. It's takes reg Dexron II, III ATF juice.
