View Full Version : Did later Wags gain a lot of weight?

I have seen a lot of people mention that Wags are heavy vehicle. My 65 weighed about 3750 lbs new and it weighs 3997 lbs now with the 360/T400/D20. For a large 4wd rig this is light and it is only about 300 lbs heavier than my Benz that only has a 3 liter turbo diesel in it. I realize that the Wag weighs about 550 lbs more than a Camaro but it is much heavier duty the the camaro. The wag is actually lighter than my 88 F150 2wd (4750). What does your Wag really weight and is it really heavy?
BTW I had mine weighed.

I believe the current weight is around 6000 lbs. It probably is due to the added emissions equipment and luxury items added over the years (air conditioning, power steering, power seats..etc). It adds up. But some of these guys in this forum would know more about the evolution.

Bob, one of Ackersons books list the later GW's shipping weight(dry no fuel etc) at 4490 lbs. This is pretty consistant with a similar(often brought up) thread on the fsj-list and most members who had their later GW's weighed came in at around 4700-4800 lbs w/fuel, driver etc.
I'm sure most of the extra fat is wiring, power motors for tailgates, door locks, windows, mirrors, seats, AC, overhead consoles 2 fan motors for the heater/AC, sunroofs, roof racks, power this-n-that's that the Kaiser era didn't have. The front axle is larger heavier as is some of the other running gear like a TF727-vs-an early T-90. Each item in itself isn't much but add them all up and throw in a couple hundred lbs for fuel...They're not near as heavy as Chev Burb or Ford Extortion but they're not in the "dainty" class either ;)

Bob I sure was wondering the same thing. Last time I ran some scrap to the yard down here I talked the guy into letting me unhook the trailer to see how heavy my rig was. I was amazed when it tipped the scale a a light 4,100 lbs. This was with me in the truck and a full tank of gas. I happen to wiegh 300 lbs too. I wonder if all the rust has caused me to lose some wieght smile.gif

My Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer both weighed in the 4950-5100lb range. I was surprised the Cherokee was so close, considering it's stripped to the bone, while the GW is loaded to the gills.

4750 on my title.
I weighed my 87 a few months ago and I beleive it was around 4500. That's without my tools and xtra gear.

I have an 89' wag, loaded. It weighed about 4,700 and some change the last time I had it weighed...minus me...and the gas tank is ALWAYS empty. Mine has had the A/C equipment and all the tree hugger garbage removed though. "DAINTY" LOL!

I have often wondered where the BIG weight came from when people mention the FSJ. I know our rigs are not the lightest, but not near the heaviest either. I have weighed many FSJ's different years and have yet to see one that goes over 4800 LBS. I have weighed different years and the weights are comparable through out all years and options added or stripped. I was using a CAT Certified scale at a Truckstop. ;)

Mine tips the scales at 4000, even, with the title stating 3900. Not sure on the wife's but it's probably close in actual street weight.

I think the cherokee weighed in at around 4200 to 4300 lbs. I worked for a steel company that had a truck scale.
P.S. That is the best looking co-driver that I have ever seen in a sig. pic., bob!! :D :D :D :D

The 6000 lb wieght mentioned earlier is probably the GVWR. My '75 has a GVWR of 6025, but on the scale, it comes to around 4500, with a 360 and no AC. My '64 thriftside weighed in at 3450. That seems like quite a difference.
Here's a question. If the vin tag states a GVWR of 5600 and the vehicle weighs 3450, that means it can handle 2000 lbs of people and cargo. Does that make it a 1-ton?

By todays standards it would but that is when trucks were trucks not cars so it would be a 1/2 ton.

i think with GVWR you have to take into account front and rear axles... so with 2000lbs capacity you're running 1000lbs per axle which means you've got a 1/2 ton ;)
my cherokee (304/t15/d20/44/44) is sposed to weigh in at about 3800 lbs. of course, my longbed J10 (360/727/208/44/20) is supposed to too!
ah well. who can account for sudden FSJ weight gain or loss? hehe
