What is the ideal method of tire rotation?

Is it: Moving the rear tires to the front and front tires back to the rear or Left rear to right front, right rear to left front and so on in a X pattern?

I have seen diagrams of both ways. I want to get maximum tire life.

I always rotate front to rear... I never cross them...

When radials started becoming the norm(early '70's) instead of bias ply it was rotate front to rear. The reason for this was is it was said that if you cross rotated an early radial the belts would separate.I guess the reasoning behind this was the tire would seat rotating in one direction and if you turned it around the belts would separate.Firestone had problems like this long before the AT-Wilderness fiasco.I still rotate front to rear, old habits if nothing else. But that's a good link BK,have to take time and read it all, thanks.
