I have been trying to get my idle and timing correct, but seem to have screwed it up. I did the TFI upgrade, the GW started amazingly fast, and ran well. Then, being the fool I am, I tried to adjust the timing and idle, and now nothing seems correct. Can someone spell out the correct order and method for adjusting timing and idle for my 88 GW?

Thanks

Do you have a timing light, vac gauge and maybe a hand held tach. What adjustments did you do?The mixture screws turn in(clockwise)till they lightly touch then out 1-1/2 turns for a baseline( if you haven't touched these maybe leave for later)Did you disconnect your vac advance when you set your timimg, and also did you have it in drive which the wheels chocked?I have my timing set at 10 degrees, she idles at 750rpm in drive(have to replace my idle solenoid)and I have 15in vac.also have adjusted my vac advance because of spark knock(pinging)Hope this helps.

Its sort of a back & forth thing. As mentioned, block the distributor vacuum & set your advance. Then adjust idle speed. Re-set timing if its changed, re-set idle speed, etc, etc.

But wait, it gets better: An improper idle MIXTURE can have you chasing your tail if its not proper.
The objective is to have a decent rpm in neutral (park) and have it drop minimally when shifting into drive...but still running smoothly as possible. If you run into a problem here, the idle mixture is probably too lean, requiring 1/2 turns counter-clockwise, and starting all over again until it all comes together. Someone else might suggest 1/4 turns on this process, but I prefer to see tangible results faster.
