Does this shadetree trick work?

Don't remember where, but I heard that stuffing a rag in the tailpipe will help to find exhaust leaks--they will become louder, or the engine will die if there are none. Anyone done this before?

Yes it does work, better off doing it when your engine produces the most Vapor like in the damp mornings or what ever depending where you live I guess that would make a big difference, but yes it does work.
