this is the info about a edelbrock 'daily driver smooth idle camshaft'. the specs seem to be the same as the cam i have now (cept my advertises duration is 262/272) in the post 'i hate my camshaft'

my question is:
the intake opens at 5* ATDC and the exhaust closes at 10* BTDC. does this mean that for 15* of crank rotation, both valves are closed?!?

Performer-Plus Camshaft/Lifters/Lube Kit (High-Tor, Advertised Intake Duration: 278 Degrees, Advertised Exhaust Duration: 288 Degrees, Duration @ .050 Intake: 204 Degrees, Duration @ .050 Exhaust: 214 Degrees, Lift @ Cam Intake: .280, Lift @ Cam Exhaust: .295, Lift @ Valve Intake: .420, Lift @ Valve Exhaust: .442, Timing @ .050 Intake Open: 5 Degrees ATDC, Timing @ .050 Intake Close: 29 Degrees ABDC, Timing @ .050 Exhaust Open: 44 Degrees BBDC, Timing @ .050 Exhaust Close: 10 Degrees BTDC, Centerlines Lobe Separations: 112 Degrees, Centerlines Intake Centerline: 107 Degrees

Hi ken,

What that means is both valves are less than 0.050" open durring this this 15*.
The specs look like a fairly mild cam that should not be to bad a driver, I don't
know that you can get 20+" vacumm from it but it is not radical by hot rod standards.
One thought is that is may be retarded by a few degrees, If I was in your shoes I
would advance the cam 4* (You likely have a multi slot crank gear that will allow
this) and see if that is more to your likeing.

Ken,
The performer plus cam is a little "big"
in my opinion for a FSJ with less than a 401.
I think you will loose some low end torque
and vacuum in exchange for more upper RPM power
that you would seldom use. it would offer
some additional highway power and would help for highway towing. You might do better to call
Crane Cams and tell them exactly what you have
for an engine, Jeep specs, gearing etc and what
you want to cam to do. They can offer a cam
with some benefits over the edelbrock offering
I believe. Comp Cams and Erson Cams can do the
same for you. To much cam in a FSJ can make the
jeep less fun.

Keep in mind folks, that Ken has a SBC, not the AMC motor, or the Buick motor in his rig. You'll have to use a different measuring stick.

On the Edelbrock cam, all the reports that I've heard say that it's not worth the trouble, because it's not much change over the stock cam at all.

Ken, I think you have other issues than the cam. I'd look in the area of the lifters, and at the valve train adjustments. Every time I've ever changed a cam on an adjustable engine, it was adj til the pushrod just can't be turned with your fingers, and then another 1/4 turn, engine running.
