I'm considering a color change for my interior. Who has
had experience with vinyl dyes - specifically for the dash
pad - and what brands/tricks have worked best?
Thanks all! :D

I used a vinyl spray to change color on a motorcycle back rest once. It worked very well and never cracked or faded.

I took a tan sunvisor from an old GWag and dyed it black with some spray-on stuff I got at Pepboys. It looked awful when wet, but after it dried it looked quite good. I tried rubbing it and scrathing it and it wouldn't come off. Its currently "weathering" on my balcony as a long term test. Still looks pretty good.

SEM is a leading brand of vinyl and plastic dyes. Good stuff. Follow directions to the letter, use their tech support if you have any questions - very helpful. The NAPA stores carry it here in Florida

I think I bought my vinyl spray at a shoe store.

There is some stuff in the Eastwood Catalog I am looking at trying. http://www.eastwoodcompany.com
Surface prep is at least 1/2 of a lasting color change.
PPG paint has color codes and paint for the plastic trim pieces and the flat dash spray for the metal. I've got a hammered '75 dash that is going to get the treatment and then stuffed in my '66 truck.

Mar-Hyde makes some that works pretty good..it depends on how much wear it will get...like arm rests, probably won't last there...I would like to know if the Eastwood stuff is any good Elliott....

I used the Eastwood stuff on the door panels and dash pad of my CJ-7. it looks *really* good. I was very impressed by it and I'm way to much of a salty bastitch to be very impressed.
Hmmmm. So, how much do these Vinyl dyes cost? I'm thinking of dyeing my dash some other color other than that ugly brownish/nutmeg color I have. ..Unless its a hard to find color. Lol. Then I'll deal with its ugliness knowing that I'm the only one out there with it ;)

You won't be the only one out there with that color Cory, that's why I want to change it. My plan is to go to a medium grey interior with a scarlet and grey exterior - any Buckeye fans out there will recognize that combination. They will also note the Chief's name - Brutus (as in Buckeye).
I appreciate everyone's input, and will investigate Eastwood's stuff as well as swing by NAPA tonight and see what they have. Y'all rock!

Surface prep will probably affect the outcome of the job. Many vinyl parts have preservatives, STP, Son-of-a-Gun, etc. that affect how well these spray paints bond and last. Also, body oils will have an affect (armrests, steering wheels). It's a good idea to clean these areas with a good cleaner and make sure to get all the cleaner residue off before painting. This may be true with dyes, as well. Be sure the cleaner is compatible with vinyl so that it won't be damaged.
