I am reposting this question...there must be a Dana 60 expert out there somewhere!!
I am considering installing a PowerTrax No-slip locker in the Dana 60 rear on my J20..I noticed in the manual that they use a spreader to open the pumkin just about .020 to remove the carrier..Is this really necessary?? If so, who makes one or can I jury rig something to do the same thing??? Also, anyone using this PowerTrax in a Dana 60?? appreciate any feedback..

Well I'm no expert on Dana 60's but I can tell you that the .020 that the case is spread is for the bearing preload. Now do you need the spreader? yes and no. Not necessarily to get the diff out, that can be done with prybars. But I would strongly reccomend one for reassembly. Some people beat it back in with a hammer, but I think thats a rough way to treat $400+ diffs. Can you rig something up? Sure. Probably with some heavy angle iron and large diameter all thread and nuts. Just beware that if you borrow ar build a spreader that you shouldn't open the case much more than .020. It may deform/crack and become a nice paperweight.

You can pull it out without a spreader. You may need to pry it out so use something that won't harm the carrier (bar wrapped with duct tape, etc)You won't be messing with the shims (they're under the carrier bearings) if you're just installing a drop in locker; it will usually drop back in fairly easy. I use a big dead blow or a block of wood. Just be mindful of the machined surfaces and the gears; you'll be fine.

Oh yeah; mark the bearing caps so you know how they came off. Use number punches (#1-left / #2-right) at the top of each one; or use a center punch with one dot being #1 and two dots being #2. You want them to go back on the same side they came from, with the same end "up" as it came off.

Good call on the bearing caps. I messed that up once and ruined a ring and pinion in about 200 miles. Figured it out as soon as I took it apartand tried to unscrew the adjusters (mopar 8 3/4 axle)
