About a month after my rig's dizzy gear slipped and jumped time, Im thinking it did it again. Last time I was driving along great and it coughed, backfired and stalled. Found that the teeth on the dizzy and the cam gear that it meets were about rounded, and it slipped a spot. Well replaced the timing chain and sprockets, the cam gear and dizzy gear last month. Today heading home, running great, the cough, backfire and stall. Maybe its something different, cause its all new. But if it jumped time again, what would cause this? What else could it be? When I try to start it, all it does is turn over normally, with an ocasional burp. Nothing leaking and no visual signs of any problems. Im really hating life right now!!!!! Thanks for any input, Dennis

Do you have fire at the plugs? If not check to see if hot wire on the coil is still connected. Mine threw that wire off and I had a heck of a time finding out what was arong.

Are you sure the distributor drive gear is on the camshaft correctly? If it isn't, you'll only be making contact with 1/4 of the gear which creates serious problems.
Don't konw if this is the problem here, but worth looking into.

well it would only fit and the cam gear one way. If it was(dizzy gear)upside down, the dizzy wouldnt slide all the way down. I know cause the frist time i put in on, I had it the wrong way and the dizzy wouldnt go all the way down. So I would have to think that it is sliding all the way into the teeth. When I pulled the dizzy to get the timing correct, the rotor turned about 1/2 turn will sliding in. So im sure it is all the way in. Will pull dizzy and no more in the morning. But from what I remember, the dizzy drive gear will only bolt on one way, I may be wrong here. Dennis

Haha...I don't completely remember myself. But from what I recall, my gear could go on either way.

Cam Walk!!! Does this very thing. There are a few that will say that the AMC will not walk a Cam, I will tell you it will. I have seen the Cam Gear bolt go through the timing cover, in fact I may have one as a conversation piece. The Cam lobes are ground at angles that are supposed to keep the cam centered. However when the Cam and lifters wear, as well as Valve Springs loose tension the cam is free to move forward when revs are brought up. When this happens the dizzy gear and cam gear are trying to stop this from happening, but fail. Dennis it would be IMPOSSIBLE to put the Cam Gear and Dizzy gear on wrong so you can eliminate that. I am afraid it is the cam though. When you pulled the front cover, did you happen to notice wear mrkes in it in front of cam? How many miles on it? See if any others come up with anything to check before you tear it apart again. ;) Good Luck :D

AMEN ! … and into the water-pump  , locking the engine up... So I ground and polished the head of the bolt that goes in the cam and was sure to use loc-tight on the next one.

wow, I read the subject and thought you were going into the past or the future... that'd make an interesting FSJ.
If you do go into the past, pick me up a good Rhino Chaser. ;)
