I have a 84 J-10. I have been trying to find what kind of tranny I have but have had no success. Figured you all might have some ideas.

Could also be a 5-speed if it's an inline six, and maybe a different 4-speed with the six also.

Need to know how many speeds you have and the engine its connected to.

Since it is an 84, I figured it was a safe bet it was not a T5 since it was last used in 83 as far as I knew. Would not be a T18 since they were onlyh used in the J20 80 and up. Unless I missed something it will be a T176.

i think it will be the t176 because that is what i have in my 83 J10 and as far as i have read that was the only 4 speed that was offered at that time unless u got a heavy dudy package or something along that line.

Somewhere in there supposedly they substituted T-4s in for the T-176s...I might be thinking of CJs though...and yes everyone else so far is correct, if it's a 4 speed it should be a T-176.

ya it was only the cjs that got the t4 because it is such a light weight tranny. the 176 was strong enought for the trucks

Well...the T-176 is *stronger* than a T-4 but is still not a truck-duty tranny in my opinion. They are ok, but they will break with minimal effort if you try.

hehe like I said it doesn't take a whole of effort. I grenaded one from just driving on the road. Aparrantly once you pass the 300ft/lb mark they get cranky. :D

LOL ya sounds like it. I think 300 is a bit much for that tranny but in a stock motor it will be just fine
