OK here's the long and short of it. I went out this weekend and wheeled in my CJ3B since my fullsize is not complete. I got shown up by a buddy in an '85 Toyota truck. We both attempted this one nasty hill and he made it, I kept stalling. Every other place we went, I was able to match him, just not a long continuous incline, greater than 50% grade.

So that has me thinking about my FSJ. I am building a 1976 Wagoneer that is going to have my 1953 Willys truck mounted on it. I have the 401, BW 1339, Dana 44's, and 35" BFG's. But am I going to get spanked again by a mild Toyota because he has EFI? What are the best carbs to run, and can EFI be adapted or purchased for the 401? Thanks for the help.

Street legal in the Republic of Calif. a concern ? If so you are SOL.
If not look into EFI guys , or Houlles (SP ??) setup.

A '76 wagon would probably run cleaner with fuel injection... if CA lets you improve your system over stock I don't know.

Thats the issue, from what I understand of Calif. laws, it does not matter
if it is cleaner it just matters that the OEM stuff is all intact.
You are confusing common sence with Calif. law, not a good thing.

I was afraid of that, they ought to spend their law enforcement $$$$ policing the border instead of policing people making their rig run cleaner.

No concern about CA smog as it will be registered as the 53 Truck. I'm considering the engine, axles, and frame as a conversion to the 53 instead of vice versa. So CA smog aside, what's the best route and any approximate price?

It looks like you dont have lockers yet, and I would venture to say that, until you get locked up, a MC4350 would not be the limiting factor. Now, if you have upgraded to an aftermarket intake and carb, then yes, chances are (unless it is a Holley truck Avenger or something, that you are going to get spanked again. It all comes down to your budget and skills. If you have close to a grand lying around, and are confident enough with your skills to make the swap, then go with some sort of TBI or something. Or if you are on a limited budget and limited skills on the swap, then maybe a Holley Truck Avenger would be the way to go.

HTAs cost around $350, but won't work with the stock intake (unless you use an adaptor for another $50)

injection starts at around $800 IIRC

Does anyone have experience with the Holley Projection? It says 275 hp max, but if that's net it should be enough for my application. If it's gross than it is a bit shy of what I need.

I can be alsmot certian that is NET HP as everyhing now adays is measured that way. I think they make a 4 bbl setup that will handle 350hp. Might want to take a look at that.
