Ok, have a question. I am buying a Cliffhanger front bumper for my J10/20 pickup. What winch should I use? Milemarker (recommended by BJ's Offroad) or a Warn. 9000 or 12000?
Thanks,
Jim

I would recomend the Warn 9500 or the tried and true Warn 8274

Stay with the warn if you want to get home.

I just bought a Pierce winch. I have in mounted but have not tried it out yet. 9000 lb rated. I bought it because of price and the specs. Series wound 3.6hp motor. Not magnetic like the Milemarker. From the diagrams they sent me it looks like it is built like a Warn. It has 6 solenoids....and a great warranty. Here is the link. http://stores.andale.com/winchwarehouse
Like I said I have not tried it out. But from specs it is very impressive. I was tied between the milemarker and it because of price. I will try it out as soon as I get my roller fairlead mounted and let you all know.

i suppose it all depends on who you talk to. granted, warn probably makes the best winch out there. but, for less money, you can get a good quality ramsey or milemarker winch. there are others here on this site that swear by them. since i don't intend to climb trees with a winch everyday, i'll probably go with a milemarker or ramsey. anyway, why pay more for something that i may not use but a few times a year?

Warn has more publicity, but the MileMarker is just as good of a winch. It is also less expensive. Many people that DON'T own a Warn winch swear it is the best, but don't have any personal experience with either winch to back up why the Warn is better.
My opinion: MileMarker makes a great winch, and has a great price. Their customer service is also very good. Warn makes a great winch, but their prices are a bit higher. Warn's customer service & the attitude of most of their employees sucks. I have recieved more rude customer "no-service" from Warn than any other company thus-far. Again, though, this is my opinion. MileMarker is my choice, and it is what I recommend.

I've always used Warn - got 4 of them and they've never let me down. I don't know anyone personally using the milemarker although I hear it's a good winch. Either way, I wouldn't let the price be the determining factor because the first time you use it in a jam it pays for itself - even if it's the only time you use it that year.

Are you folks talking about the Milemarker hydraulic or electric winches??

Somewhere a 4x4 website did a real world shootout
between the Warn, Ramsey, and Milemarker. They all performed well with the Ramsey and Milemarker being much cheaper. Problem is when you constantly use your winch in tough conditions over a period of years, the Warn wins hands down. Go to the Pirate site and do a search, the pro's have had terrible luck over long periods of time with anything other than a warn. If you just need a winch for occassional duty, I believe the Ramsey and MileMarker electric winches would do everything you need them to do.
I had a Ramsey 9000 on my trailer which saw continous HD use. It started to peter out after a couple of years with a noticable difference in performance.
In my opinion though, the Milemarker Hydraulic winches are superior, will last longer, and are reliable. I am going to run a separate PTO driven hyd pump for the front and rear winches to avoid overheating the power steering pump which will already be running a hyd steering setup and hydroboost brake system.
