I swapped and 87 engine and fly wheel in to a 82 727 trans The old starter would not work. With somebodys advice here I used the mini starter found on the doner GW. I jumped the the solenoid as told here and VIOLA it works The problem is that it want to hang on the fly wheel just a second or 2 too long. Does this starter need shimming, Grease or what. Has anyody ever done that?

That mini start should be used with an accompnying flexplate. The mismatch may be the reason it's hanging up.

The newer starter has a longer nose, but the same mouting flange. I'm guessing your problem is that you're jumping it too long or have rewired the starter-mount solenoid improperly. As soon as the key is released, the starter drive should retract. Does it sound smooth when the gears are engaged? The only other possibility is an almost shot solenoid / starter drive or a starter drive that's not meshed to the wear on the flywheel.

I used the the proper flex plate basically the 87 engine flex plate and starter came all together. The mistake was when I used th eoriginal starter on that system and it would do anything at all except grind. The I asked a few Q's on this board and was told how to get it to work by putting on the mini starter. The flex plat looks good and starter looks good it just sounds like the drive gear isnt releasing quickly enough.

I think if he used the old flywheel, the starter would definitely not work, and would have worked with the original Ford starter. If he had the newer flywheel installed, the Ford starter would frewheel and not engage - which is what I think he described.

The mistake was when I used th eoriginal starter on that system and it would do anything at all except grind It's possible that when you socked in the old starter, which was too deep, you probably damaged some teeth on the flywheel, especially on the outer edge, or even bent the ring gear. Take out the starter and inspect it.
