View Full Version : A/C acting flaky

I was reading in the Tech library about '86 GW's having a problem with evaporator icing problems when the temp and humidity get high.
Blows cool at first, then slowly warms up.

This kinda seems like what's happening. My A/C has been working for about 8 months now flawlessly (when it's cooler and humidity's lower). But now that it's getting warm..

Side note: When it's running, the compressor makes a rattling noise like bolts being shaken in a bucket, but that has been going on since the beginning with no noticeable problems.

The write-up says these may be the culprit:
I was wondering where the following are located on my '84 Wag:

1. A/C temperature control module (TCM)

2. Evaporator thermistor probe

Anyone know where these are located on an '84?

Thanks,

I do not know about the 84, but the older rigs have a sight glass on the small line on top of the fenderwell. Look at the glass and see if you can see any bubbles shooting by, if you can the system is low on charge (cause it to freeze) (you will be able to see some bubbles when the compressor first starts sometimes).

Also check the discharge air temp. at the vents, it should be in the 40s, if not the system should be low unless the compressor has about had it. If the temp is lower (on a warm day) the system is overcharged and all the noise is being caused by liquid refrigerant slamming the comp.

To realy know for sure, the system pressures need to be checked out.

To test out the stat, turn it up and down to see if it turns the compressor on and off. If the system in an 84 is under the dash with the control knobs mounted on it, it does not have a TCM or thermistor probe just that temp control with a remote sensing bulb near the evap. coil

The compressor could have a rod knock
