OK, so I guess I first need to admit that I'm a novice. I'm in the process of getting my '69 Gladiator on the road. I'm almost there, having rebuilt the fuel system, the brakes, ignitions system, etc. Its running and really wants to go, go, go! I had all the tail lights working except the hazards and brake lights and then I went and replaced the brake light switch. The hazards still don't work (I suspect a bad switch) and now I get brake lights but no blikers! But get this: When I apply the brakes and the turn signal together, I get brake lights and the turn indicator light on the console lights up and stays lit. When I DO NOT apply the brakes I get no turn indicator or blikers at all. Have I cross wired something somewhere? I've traced it all but can't seem to find the problem. This is driving me nuts. Also, is there a wireing diagram avalable that is more detailed than in the shop manual?

WOW electrical problems my all-time favorite nightmare! Well, you never really said you rewired the whole truck or not, I will assume that you have altered it, more so at the rear of the truck as I am sure the wiring was a rats nest at best. Going by the problems you described I would check to see if you have the tail lights lit up on the right element, and the brake and sig/haz on the other. Take off the lenses, front and back of your truck turn on your park lights and check and see if the tail light element is lit this would be the tallest element in the bulb be sure that this element is lit on all four lights and only this element, if you have it right then turn off the tail lights and do the same with the brake lights this time the shorter of the two should light up on the rear of the truck this would also be the case for your hazards and signals as well. Front of truck no brake light circuit but be sure the sig/haz are lighting up the shorter of the two elements in the bulb. If you find any of the elements crossed it will be just a simple matter of switching wires. Also before all else check and be **** sure the flashers are good replace them to be sure I have seen these cause a Tylenol moment as well! Hope this helps

Yep. The flasher was the first thing I replaced. And you are correct, I did not rewire the entire truck and the rear end was a total speghetti festival! I'll try your diagnostic method and hopefully I can get through this. Any thoughts on a diagram?

Norway, huh? I'll be up that way this July. Say Ya to da U.P., eh?

Maybe that you've got a bad turn signal mechanism in the steering column. The brake lights go through it also - that is how the turn signal will still blink even when the brake light(s) are on.

The early columns can be a pain. The one in my 65 had a broken steering wheel and a broken switch, so I changed it out by using the floor mount plate and dash mounts from the original column on a slightly modified 78 column to build a hybrid. I did NOT have to cut the dash to do this and it works great. Also I used an auto column since I went from a 3 on the tree to an auto tranny.

Mine was doing some of the same stuff I couldnt figure it out I was starting to give up having all but the left turn working. on the way to work one night after a frustrating day a problems solving of no resualt. I started talking to the Jeep (dont have raido going yet) and asking what the problem was only response was a noise lifter! But the next day when I was ready to come home the signal starting working and has every since!!!! So my advice Give Up, Ask The Jeep What's Wrong and let it fix its self! well it worked for me :]

Maybe 87Grand is right. I'll try, in soothing tones, to convince it that the world will be a better, safer, more compasionate place if the turn signals and hazards are working. Or I could creatively visualize it healing itself. There are books on that about healing your pet!
Seriously though, thanks for all the sugestions. I've had to give up for a week or two. I gotta travel for work. So I'll see what happens when I get back to it.
Anybody know if diagrams exsist that are better than the ones in the manual? I eventually want to rewire the entire beast and a better diagram would help a lot.
