So i just ordered the complete package of rear window stuff from Specialty Jeep (Bill), they were really nice and helpful..

Parts should be here next week.....

I've read the posts from a REAR WINDOW search and I think I got the gist of it......

I've got an extra set of hands but want to know any helpful hints in doing this project...I am a little scared opening up the back like this but most of you have said it's an easy fix.......

Any pre-op suggestions or hints would be great

thanks

(after posting I find that I am now a Member, oh happy day!!)

patience, your favorite slippery stuff, a vac to suction out the dirt. rust busterand some more patience. apiece of 4 mil poly case you needto use the jeep. im slower than a snail, and i usually hafta take a coupla tries to get everything right or at least working. i spent a good 12 hours on my last tailgate-ectomy. 2 things to consider; 1,use a 1 1/2" hole saw to give access to the regulator clips for removal and replacement. measure carefully withe regulator about 1" above full down. 2, there is no need to release the alarm clock spring, just give it a light greasing. good luck let us know how youre doing

A couple more questions about your post

1,use a 1 1/2" hole saw to give access to the regulator clips for removal and replacement. measure carefully withe regulator about 1" above full down.

What do you mean from this, from what I've read I just need to open the back of the tailgate and remove the clips (usually busting them in the process, already ordered the replacements).....what do I need to measure???

Bry, you'll see what he means when you look at it. The clips are always about 6" inside the opening, not directly below the opening. Try 2 long slotted screwdrivers or long needlenose pliers to remove them. Or drill the aforementioned access. Also, for those on the cheap, nylon cable ties make passable replacement retainers.

bigbry:

I rebuilt my rear window system last winter. Removing the rear clips wasn't that bad at all.

What I did to get the most favorable access to the clips that hold the window frame was to raise the window while the gate was down to get these clips near the access panel. To do this, you will need to close the safety switch with one hand and operate the window tailgate switch (key) with your other hand. Apply WD-40 or anything like it to the clips. Wait a little while and use a wide blade screw driver to remove them. I hand both rusty clips off in less that 10 mins.

Just follow the rest of the info in the tech section and you will have a great operating window.

Good Luck!

Here's a tip for putting the retaining clips BACK on. Shim the arms between the outer skin and the bottom channel (I used some playing cards). This is so you can pry the clips on using a long screwdriver levered against the access opening without the arms flexing away from the opening. This should be clear when you look inside the tailgate.
If it isn't clear let me know and I'll send you a sketch. Dean.

I purchased everything, will be replacing botom channel and the two side channels....

I guess it's all guess work until I get in there.........

Is it possible to do this in a few hours???

Just got my whole bunch of parts from bill (SJP) the other day. Had to aquire a couple air sanders so I could properly restore my tailgate as a whole before bothering to fix the window. So that is tommorow. Once the rust is ground off and primed and painted, I can throw those parts at it. Guess what? you get a free pine 1x4 with your parts.. Im not sure where in the tailgate that is supposed to go but I think I can cram it in there..
