So, I just got a battery. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif only reason I didn't have one before is b/c the truck not being able to drive I figred it won't need a battery till it was ready to run. well, ignition won't turn for me, I got it to turn once when the key was only part way in but never again regardles of key possistion. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif then desaster struck and the key broke. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif was able to retreave broken part and get new key made, http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif new one workes on the gas tank but the ignition still won't turn. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif so enough of my crap and on to the Q's: what bradn should I look for to replace my ignition, and if that is necassary. If anybody has had this probleme before and managed to fix it let me know, please. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/confused.gif

I keep two locksmiths in fine homes because of my propensity to loose keys! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
No, really, are you sure that the key that you broke was the correct one?

Removing the column and taking the whole thing to a locksmith is the cheapest way unless you know how to file a blank yourself.Getting the old cylinder out with out a key is tough.

the cylinder is in the dash board and easy to get to but heres the problem. the truck only came one key and it fits the gas tank. the person I got it from started it with that kay but I'm not sure how.

Never had this before but I gotta believe that since it rotated and started once with the key partially in that something inside the column or ignition switch needs cleaned and/or reconnected. I know that's not precise but doesn't it make sense? If the new key allows you to remove the cylinder then it sounds like an A+B scenario.

Here is one on Ebay.

You can get them at Wal-Mart in the auto electric section. Or your local parts store can get it. You will need to put ring terminals on your wires to use it and it has a bezel that screws on instead of the old collar and spring style.

Chill man, take a deep breath. OK
Is this on your '66 ? And the switch is in the dash?

If so, take the darn thing out. Now, tell us out here if you just want to get it running, or you want it restored. If you just want it running, jumper on an on/off switch and a momentary switch for the starter. (You know, one that turns a circuit on only for as long as you hold it down.) Then you can deal with the stupid key cylinder at your convenience http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif or not bother at all.

If I had the time, inteligance, and money to restore it I'd be replacing a lot more than just the ignition. so having said that you can probobly geuss that I just the bugger runing. I'll take your advice and pull it and clean it out as soon as possible. you know I once saw a truck (not jeep) that had a starter button like was mentained in the ashtray, and seeing as how these old j-trucks have two ashtrays... lets see my brother try to borrow the truck by stealing my keys, lets see him Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley himself when the ignition don't work...hehehe. this is giving me evil ideas.

I'm new to the jeep world, but my guess is there are more than 3 wires to/from that switch. Here's what was typical on my old cars. Anyone with a 66 electrical diagram?

One Hot coming off of the battery, 12 guage (big) usually red, sometimes black.

Ignition lead, slightly smaller, 14 or 16 gauge. Only on when switch is "on"

Wiper lead, only on when sw is on.

Accessory lead, on when sw is "on" or on "access" position.

Starter lead, goes to starter relay, only on when turned to start, springs iff when released. Color should be matchable to one of the leads going to your starter relay (under hood.)

Simplest will be to put the hot on one side of a heady duty automotive switch, and everything else on the otherside, Except the starter lead.

T or jumper off of the hot to a seperate spring loaded switch for the starter lead.

You could jumper a bypass for the accessories if you really wanted, just a complication I think.

Hope this helps. Anyone else know more?

I think the dash mounted switch probably helped confuse the hoods in my neighborhood who are too young to remember how to steal an old car, and not knowledgable enough to figure it out. Also kept my antenea from being taken to make into a zip gun. Of course, a zip gun probably wouldn't impress anyone in West Philly today, if it ever did.
