View Full Version : Wing Question

I'm reading the gas mileage thing... I would like to say that my 18 year old Wagoneer got *280* miles to my last topped off tank of gas! I couldn't believe it! That's without the a/c on though.
Next question. Would taking off the deflector wing in the back help a whole bunch with mpg? That thing points straight down! That's got to be a HUGE drag against the engine! I notice with the window down, it actually sucks air IN the Wag, not down. I guess it does the down thing with the window up. So all in all, I don't need the wing!
Whatcha think?

Mine's (the Chero) has an aftermarket job on it. I don't know if it would help gas mileage, but it probably wouldn't hurt anything for it to come off. Except for the big honkin' holes it'd leave in the roof.

Maybe if you tipped it up like a spoiler, it would help keep you on the road at high speeds. You know like the wing on a Daytona or Superbird..........

The other day a nascarr official jumped out at a stoplight and checked my rear spoiler with a template.. I was afraid for a min I my have been DNF'd..

Heh.. very funny! I'm just gonna take the wing off, not the brackets.. thought about those roof holes. Also, I can always put it back on easier if I want to that way.

yeah, just what we need. a 2-1/2 ton car with *more* downforce! ;)

Perhaps it's me, but our rigs aren't what I would consider "aerodynamic". After all, the front end is shaped more like a Mack truck than most other rigs on the road. I don't think the wing decreases mileage much at all. Probably not enough to notice. It's not the size of a tailgate or anything. Just my thoughts.... Oh yeah, if NASCAR officials stopped me to "set the template", I think I would have to leave a Jeep footprint across the top of their pacecar!! :D :D

How about a 4X8 sheet of 3/4" marine grade plywood, hinge it to the front of the roof with a hydraulic ram in the back. When you're doing the highspeed dash down the road or chasing those little sporty cars down twisty roads it'll move up and down to help you keep traction. Just think of the downforce and cornering you'll have. When you aren't going fast it will give you shade and protection from birds. Wow maybe we need to patent this idea......

HAhahaha! funny! smile.gif This is not a 911 Carrera! smile.gif I just wanted to keep up with non-winged Wag's. 280 miles to a tank of gas probably makes me surpass alot of them though smile.gif Not bad for an 18 year old 360 with 114k miles and all the emissions stuff on and working eh? Those Air pump lines on the passenger side of the motor don't look to hot though.. kinda crusty (the rubber ones)

We had a thread about this a while back, on the old forum, but I'll recant here briefly.
The primary purpose of the rear roof wing is to stabilize the vehicle at higher speeds, like feathers on a dart or arrow. As an after-affect, it also runs air over the rear window and helps prevent dirt from settling there.
SnakeEyes, I would really like to have your rear wing if you're going to get rid of it. I already have the mounts, which I took from Narnian's parts rig. But the wing I got is bent.
