View Full Version : Rear window "thump" when closed

Hi Guys,

Okay, heres another rear window question.

My 90 GW rear window works fine except that at the very end of it's upward travel the window "pushes" into the weather strip. I assume this is to make a good seal but it then slips from this "sealed" possition with a thump?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

I think mine's doing the same..When it's all the way up, the weatherstrip kinda comes unfastnened and gets pushed up, accompanied by the "thump" sound. Haven't been too worried about it b/c I plan on replacing all the rubber back there. Hoping that solves it. My luck, it won't.

Yeah, mine does the same thing. I have no idea why, but I figure no harm is being done. It spooks who ever is riding with me in the car though. If I just put up the window and we go driving down the road, the window will pop, and they think their life is in danger. It's just one of her things she does. Oh well.

Yep, my '89 does the same thing. Perhaps it's another "undocumented feature"?

I would check the tightness of all the mounting bolts in the tailgate...when I took mine apart I noticed all the bolts were a little loose.

Mine does the same thing. Kinda like it locks into shut position. I think it is an alignment problem. Check for wear aound the window seal.

Ditto for mine. Also, I noticed that when I drive with the rear window down the tailgate rattles & squeaks quite a bit, but when I put the window up, the rattles go away. Also, the tailgate does not seem shut tight when the window is down (hence the squeaks & rattles) It appears to be aligned properly and all the stops are intact. How can I tighten it down??

This is the coolest feature my wag has. I can get an unexpected passenger into cardiac arrest when I put it up. Hey Joe-Bob, look that guy has a gun over there. A little flip of the lever. Up goes the window. Of course I had it pre-set about 2 inches down and "BOOM"! It takes a little time for the unexpected passenger to regain facial color but I haven't had to perform CPR yet so it continues to be fun.

I watched closely one time and notice that the inner window wiper flipped up while the window was going up and when the window was closed all the way it went back down into position with a loud "POP". Every seal, track and rubber is new so I know they aren't worn. I need to look at it closely but my guess is that the clips have separated a bit allowing the wiper to move.

Yep,

The old poping sound is always good for a good laugh with an unsuspecting passenger but I sure would like to fix it. I am going to take the window assy out and have a good look in the next week or two. I'll let you know what I have found
