View Full Version : Will Lockers on front engage while in 2WD?

I just got back from my first wheeling with Christine and I could have really used some lockers. I've convinced myself to put a LockRight on the back but I'm wondering about the front. I normally drive in 2WD on the road. Since I have the NP229, my front hubs are permanently locked so the front drive shaft spins all the time, just without load. I've heard that Lockers will impact stearing when on the front but if I'm in 2WD, there should not be an torque on the differential. Am I correct in assuming that a locker on the front will not engage and therefore not affect stearing while in 2WD?

Opinions please.

It will due to the fact that both axles will be locked together. When you turn tight each wheel will want to turn at the same speed. This will cause a very heavy and understeer condition. I would just lock the rear forget the front. ARB or a OX Locker that could be engaged and dissengaged would be another option.

You could also put Manual Hubs on the front axle then run a Locker. You would NEVER want to forget to lock the Hubs when you go to 4 Wheel drive though, it will ruin the t-case. Steering would still be a problem though, when hubs are locked

I dot think you will need a front locker. Put a locker in back and you will be able to go places in 2wd that required 4wd before. And if you ever drive in snow doing so with lockers front and rear is VERY tricky.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll install a locker just in the rear for now.

you could also go with a detroit true trac. its not noticeable when steering, and it will still pull very nicely with some brake modulation. its one of the best units for front use,IMO,next to something selectable.
