Sigh.... I hate trying to figure this kind of stuff out. I like what's broke to be obvious. Here are my symptoms, any suggestions are greatly appriciated!
runs rough/misses at idle - worse when cold. Stalls occasionaly and then sometimes won't start! Gets flooded easily I think. Usually starts fine.
plugs/wires/cap/rotor not new but look fairly good. Coil looks old.
couldn't find any vacuum leaks with 1/2 a can of starting fluid.
Carb doesn't look like it's ever had a rebuild.
Start with rebuilding the carb? Replace the coil? New plugs and all the rest? If you need to know anything else to give me an idea what to try just let me know!

I'd start with a cap, rotor, wires and plugs, coil, fuel filter, PCV valve. Set the timing. Check all vacume connections. Then maybe rebuild the carb and I'd replace the float and air filter too. You should be good to go for quite a while then.

I would check over every inch of the vacuum lines. All of them.

ditto on all of the above. a weak coil will make a 360 run lousy. i chased a gremlin in my 84 for over a year. ran lousy,but it ran. bro-in law,suggested a coil.best 5 minutes i ever spent under a car hood.

Ps, do the normal tune up stuff 1st. this establishes a baseline from which to start from. do the cheap easy stuff 1st. it could turn out to be a carb trouble, but a lousy ignition is a main cause of running rich.

OK... to continue what makes this board great, the EXCHANGE of information and knowledge about FSJs here is what happened with my idle problem.
It was as simple as a adjusting the idle mixture! I was thinking of leaning it out because it seemed to run better on cool mornings when there was more air, but a friend who is a better mechanic(owns 23 muscle cars. Some in car muesums.) suggested enriching it. I should figured that as the plugs weren't fouled.
I opened both screws 1/2 a turn and and idled 100% better!
The cold idle is still funky but I figure I'll mess with the choke when it get colder.
