TRAIL REPAIRS - SOMETIMES CHEAP AND QUICK

At one time or another we have all broken down be it on the trail or on the road. We all have made quick repairs to get us going again. I have one to share with you.
If you have a NP 229 X-case and your vacuum mode switch fails ( broken vacuum lines, failed motor, etc.) you can still engage 4 HI or 4 LO by:

1- Remove vacuum motor.
2- Remove mode adjusting rod from lever by unthreading.
3- Stuff you will need: one carriage bolt 5/16" X 6", two nuts, two 5/16" washers, two 1/2" washers.
4- Thread one nut to head of carriage bolt.
5- Add one 5/16" first and then one 1/2" washer.
6- Pass bolt through mounting hole that was used to hold vacuum motor.
7- Add one 1/2" washer then one 5/16" washer and thread nut about 4" from end of bolt.
8- Thread bolt into mode rod.
9- Thighten nut to take up slack on mode rod. Making sure that mode rod is fully engaged in 4 HI.
10- Tighten remaining nut to vacuum motor mount.
11- Do not take your mode selection switch out of 4 X 4.

You are now stuck in 4 X 4 and should be able to shift your range rod from 4 HI to 4 LO with no problems. Include this hardware with your truck. You never know when you may need it again.

this one isnt as well thot out,but it worked. one time i was leaving a trail(literally smile.gif ) down the trail after catching the oil pan skidplate on somethin,and tearing a sm hole inthe oil pan. i drove it all the whay home with one of my socks stuffed in between the oil pan and skidplate.

my fix the next day at home wasnt muchbetter tongue.gif i cut the loose part of the skidplate off,and ran a couple of metal screws ito the holes. it stayed that way until i swapped my engine this year.

make sure you have an extra sock in your parst box,so you dont have to remove one that youre wearing :D

im sure ive got some others if i think a minute ;)
