I need to put the smog pump and related stuff and cat on the '87 GWag I just got to get it legal for Missouri. The exhaust manifold holes for the air tubes have been welded shut. Will it be hard to drill that out to reinstall the tubes, or will I have to retap the threads? I've never worked on a FSJ before (I'm mainly a Mustang guy), so I don't even know what it's supposed to look like. Should I go with headers? The smog-legal Edelbrocks look good. I'll be keeping the Jeep pretty close to stock, with maybe a 4-bbl and intake in the future. Any help would be appreciated. Also, would not having the smog and cat explain the black/gray oily/gassy/watery crap spitting out of the tailpipe? Thanks in advance!

Go with the headers or try to pick up some used manifolds from a wrecking yard. You may be running a little rich, most of us are, causing the black tail pipe. The water is just condensation that hasn't been burned out of the pipe yet, exhaust pipe has to get real hot for that.

OK, then, here's what I'm thinking. Edelbrock headers (w/ copper gaskets and Stage 8 locking header bolts) feeding into a single 3" high-flow cat and Flowmaster Delta 40 (2-chamber), then over the rear axle and split it into 2.5" duals and exit out the back on either side of the receiver. What I need to know, though, is what cat to get. I want a 3" high-flow. Should I get one with or without an air tube? Isn't the air injection done only near the exhaust ports on the manifold/header and not also at the cat? I was thinking of getting one of the 3" high-flow Catco cats from Summit, but I'm not sure which one to get. I think I'll get the one they have that's a 3", 16.5" long, and no air tube. Sound good? I need to know ASAP so I can get this thing tagged!

No tube is right.

If you want to run headers and be smog leagal, I beleive you can get headers that have the mounts for the air pump manifolds. You don't really loose much HP by keeping the air pump anyway.

The Edelbrocks are smog-legal.

Thanks for the help, guys. I ordered all the stuff I mentioned above today from Summit. Unfortunately, I had to clarify to the guy that it was an AMC 360!
