I'm on the last stretch of fixing my wifes 86 GW and I found a great deal on an engine/tranny combo from a 78 J pickup. Will the xfer case bolt to the 400 or do I need to switch the xfer case and axels.

By the way, in a week or so I should have a complete pickup available for parts - everything but the engine and tranny.

Tanx,

Greg

Yes... But...

You'll have to do some major work... You'll need a Chev Th400 to NP208 tail housing and output shaft at the very least. Then you'd have the bolt pattern you'd need... Caveat, check the spline counts for the chev output shaft and the jeep output shafts... they may be different!

It would be a lot easier to just locate the correct Tranny. ;)

Let me see if I really understand this.

The np228 on my Jeep Waggoneer will not bolt to a TH400 on my Jeep truck? Doesn't the Jeep TH400 tranny already have the Jeep output shaft and tail housing?

I guess I thought that if I was using parts from Jeeps they'd pretty much bolt together.

The only two T-Cases that bolt to the TH400 is the Full time 4 wheel drive, Quadra Trac BW 1339 or the Part time D20 T-Case. The NP228 ONLY bolts to the TF727 Transmission. Though the TH400 is a Jeep Version it is specific to what ever Transfercase was factory behind it. Bottom line is You need a TF727 to go in front of your NP228 or a lot of $$$$ in Adapters. ;)

Okay. That makes some sense.

I guess I'll think of a plan "b".

Thanks,

Ok, lets explain this a bit better... You COULD make it bolt up if you REALLY wanted to! (Would be cheaper to find a TF727 to replace yours though)

NP228/229/208s share bolt patterns (totally different from the QT). But Chevy did use NP208s behind some TH400s (3/4 ton 80s trucks I think) So in theory, by using the Jeep TH400 tranny you can get, and obtaining the tail-housing/output shaft (assuming proper # of splines on the output shaft) from a chevy with said setup... One could mount a Jeep NP228 to a TH400.

the adapter for the th400 can be had at chev for $85.00 and the output shaft can come from a trans shop but the 208 from the chev had 2 spline counts 23x1-7/8 and 32x2 but in 1980-85 chev 1/2 ton 4x4 used a output shaft with 23 spline which would make the 228/9 also avail
