Hmmm.....finally pulled the top cover on the T176(or whatever variation) in the '83 J10 today and took a looksie inside.....whewww......not purty....

Yes, that IS the reverse gear that's, well, not exactly in original condition! redface.gif So much for fixing this without pulling it.....gonna go look at that Ford tranny again(T18 or NP435...but think it's T18)...

Also....wrote down the casting # on the top. Had read T176's had a casting # of 2604203. Well, mine's C-2604208. Yes, it's definitely an 8 at the end! Could this be the T177 version, being it's behind a 258? Anybody know on that?

On a side note....pulled the seat the carpeting as well...and found I'd gotten a bonus with this J10...got part of a Honcho! smile.gif Looks like I have a good share of cab floor repair work to do before putting seat in again! redface.gif

haha that is funny... well at least I think so ;) I guess i just am lucky I don't have to worry about that living over here in california and all... good luck.. maybe you should cut a whole in your carpet if you use it again so that everyone can see your cool honcho sign..

hehe I think the Honcho floor board was optional equipment that year :D very rare... I'm sure you could get good money for it on ebay ;)

The more you round 'em the easier they are to shift. Once drove a 1st generation Ford Courier that you could shift without the clutch. LOL

KerryHeeeheee......thank goodness it wasn't me that put it in that condition! :D I bought the truck with no reverse. Truck has a plow on it, and PO said R went out while he was plowing with it, so it's actually amazing to see only that one gear in rough shape. I have "no" idea what the exact circumstances were when it went....was before I got it, but it couldn't-na been pretty. The top covers are apparently notorious for problems too, and this one looks just fine. But, definitely need to be getting at tranny options now.....oh well, other than Tranny and some body work, and truck not being mint, it's not half bad. Been using it to haul plenty of wood already too....just gotta be careful where I park it! tongue.gif

I didn't take a close look at the fluid, but didn't notice it being all sparkly offhand...I will take a closer look when I remove the cover again......BTW, gear looks to be Brass....same kinda sparring and feel I've seen on a ground up garden tiller brass gear.

Anyway....glad to be able to say it wasn't me that rammed that gear up! smile.gif

What makes that happen? I have a t176 and now I'm scared. My reverse works, but will grind sometimes unless I double clutch.
