View Full Version : Not sure what this noise is... any ideas.

Okay i have narrowed it down to two things but not sure what it is.
When I step on the gas real hard and I get traction (no tire spin) my rig makes a clicking sound, kind of feels like the clutch in the tranny is slipping. Absolutely no go, I let off the gas and accelerate normal no problem. It does in without 4wd and especially noticed it on my last of road adventure climbing steep grades in 4low. Or could this be my t case chain slipping. Not sure what it is. It does not do it all the time and it did go away once when I added some trany treatment. Or at least I thought it went away. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
TIA :D

My Suburban just had a similar problem, turned out to be a bad rear u-joint in the rear drive shaft. If I jumped on it it would go, but make a hell of a noise, especially so if there was any kind of grade involved.

WOW -thanks, IH! My Suburban is having that problem and I couldn't for the life of me find it. Thanks!
Not sure if that's Mike's problem, but you sure helped me! :D

I was not thinking that...I know they need to be replaced. But it is actually a slip.
To sum it up...click click click and no go no go no go.... No power getting to the wheels. It is not just a noise it is mechanical. RPMs will raise as usual but when the slipping noise occurs no go or slow go. I do not floor my Wag very often but would like to figure it out as it limits my wheelin' abilities. Not that I have any LOL :D

Hmmmm.
When's the last time you changed your tranny fluid and filter? It might be that simple. (If you do this, don't forget to adjust the bands while you're in there.)
Could be viscious coupling in the X-case (229 right?).
Chain slipping in the X-case though is sounding more like the culprit, now that I think about it. I have not ventured into the 229's realm yet so I don't now if there is a chain inspection port like a QT unit has.

I changed it about 3k ago. And it is in good shape. Changed the t case a month ago.
I know that if the clutch in the auto tranny slips it will make that noise in gms but not sure in a waggy. How would I check the t case chain? I know when I grab the front drive shaft there is movement quite a bit I may add. But that was with it in 2wd. So that may not be a good test.

Have you checked the proportioning valve/valve lever? On most transmissions you have a kick-down lever attached to the carb linkage, on our 727s though it is actually a variable valve that controls how the tranny shifts. Since you are saying it acted differently depending on how you romped on it, thought that might be a place to start.

Unfortunately I have no practical experience with the 229 so I'm not alot of help.
When you say "changed the t-case" are you talking fluid or the whole t-case?
I will crawl under mine tonight and see how much rotational play my front drive shaft has. I would think that it should have very little.

Yes let me correct that. I changed the fluid.
The sound is simple...like a bike...clicking when the chain falls off. Would it do it in 2wd also if it was that though???? Man,,,,I hope it is the tranny...LOL... I just do not know this t case stuff. I really think it is the tranny slipping(clutch) because it does not do it all the time in 2 wd... just some times. And it went away once when I added some tranny stuff to the tranny the time before last oil change. Also when I am pulling a heavy load It does it on hills...Heavy like 3k or more. I am thinking of changing the tranny fluid next weekend and adjusting the bands and adding some lucas to it and see what it does. That may help me eliminate the t case unless someone can tell me how to check it. I am at a loss.

When you change your tranny fluid, look to see if there is any debris....like clutch material.

Not sure if this helps, but my 229 does this when it does not come completely out of 4x4. That is to say, I will engage the vacume switch, things will seem 'normal', but after awhile, it will simply 'slip' with a weird noise. It will also not go into PARK in this state. The fix for me, until I figure it all out, is to gently go into reverse, then forward etc. This does seem to get it out of 4X4 and into plain old 2X2. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing, but I though at the time it was fluid, blown tranny, blown ?.
