My newest favoritest mechanic thought so too. I've had no less than 6 mechanics/technicians try to figure out why Bushwood spark-knocks and overheats at highway speeds.
Many of you here have suggested that it's overadvancing... I've shared this with several technicians - the last before yesterday, being a &%*#ing Jeep Dealership technician.
I found a guy here in Atlanta (A.J. at Motor Works) who specializes in "Drivability and Emmisions" work. He was described by another local mechanic as the guy who can diagnose, adjust, tune and dial-in any motor.
A.J. confirmed that the EGR and all vacuum is funtioning fine, the carb' is fine, the cooling system is fine...
He found my base timing to be 10 degrees advanced - within spec; 8-12 degrees. The total advance at 2,500 rpm was 52 degrees! it should've been 29.5-38.5
He left the base at 10 and set the total at 37. He said he drove it at 65 mph for miles with no spark-knock and no movement of the temp needle.
Tomorrow I'll have a chance to spend some time on the highway and see for myself...
It may seem simple but you can't imagine how exciting the prospect of driving 70 mph on a road trip could be!!!
