I have a 1980 cherokee with the 727 and the NP208. I can get a really good TH400 for like $30, so my question is can I mate the Th400 to my NP208? I really like my part-time 4-wheel drive and don't want to make the change to the quadratrack. Thanks for any info.

you will need the adapter from 1980-85 chev diesal th400/208 also there were 2 output shafts 27 x1 7/8 and 32 x 2 1/2 out put the 32 spline is the stock 2 wheel drive short shaft and the other is a th 375 short output chevy has the adapetr plate for a 1985 chevy diesal 3/4 p/u th400-208 last one i bought (1998) $75.00

Grim: you need a driver drop front axle

gsmikie, I like hearing these things. So what would I need to adapt my T-18/208 to my TH400? The 208's that were behind the T-18 were 31 spline i think? Now it sit's as a TH400/Dana 20. Or would it be easier just to put in a 727/208 from the yard? I have the driver drop axle still so no big deal.

Thanks for the info. I have a drivers side drop 44 in the front so that's not a problem. With the two output shafts, I need the 27 spline? Is that correct, and how do I know if it has the 27 spline or the 32 spine? Also, is the TH400 a fairly strong and decent transmission or would I be better off just finding another 727? Thanks for your help guys.

id find another 727. besides having to disassemble a gm th400 to get the adapter and tailsahft, youll need to disassemble the 208 to swap in either a 27 or 32 spline input gear. your 208(from behind the 727) will have a 23 spline input
add to that the fact that youll prolly need new drivesahfts since the th400 will be a different length, and your $30 th400 has prolly turned into a much bigger expense than a $100-$150 used 727
j10/j20 project, you as well are better off simply swapping in a 727 if you have a driver side axle and intend to keep it,and youd rather have an auto than a t18.
there is no combo if factory parts that will let you swap a 31 spline 208 onto a th400 or 727,so no matter what you do youll have to swap out the 208s 31 spline input gear for 23,27,0r 32. you could very eaily sell or trade your t18/208 for a 727/208 if you dont intend to use it smile.gif
