The other day I noticed that I can put the old girl in gear and let out the clutch without stepping on the gas, and the truck's perfectly willing to sit and idle, without moving. Kind of like a tired automatic.
Does this mean anything to anyone?
I don't know if there's any connection, but when I come off the clutch and onto the gas (the part that was so hard about learning stick way back when) it shudders heavily and the chirps the tires a little, no matter how gentle I am with it. Maybe that'll ease up with time, maybe not; I should mention that I've yet to drive the truck more than 50 feet, since it's not yet registered, tagged, etc and I'm on a military installation.
Thanks

Couldn't say for sure, but it sounds like something's up with the clutch, like maybe it's worn and not catching like it should. I got a '79 J-10 for parts, it's got a 3 spd in it and you gotta rev it up real high to get going, but after that it moves ok with no problems. Also check your parking brake maybe?

Hope this helps a bit,
Anthony

If it will idle when the clutch is out and th tranny is in gear but not go anywhere it is time for a clutch. If you mean it will take off smoothly in gear at an idle but shudders when taking off when you it give a little gas, check the motor mounts. You could also have a warped clutch disk or oil on the disk but I would check the motor mounts first.

Went out and checked, and I guess that on level ground, when I release the clutch, without getting on the gas, it crawls forward, but only in 1st gear. In 2nd, it will just stall out, like it ought to. Now if I add the gas pedal to the equation, she acts like I never learned to drive a stick. I checked the motor mounts and they look fine, and she jerks forward strongly enough that I don't think it's clutch slippage. What are the cures for warped or oil-contaminated clutchdisks?

PS I told a mechanic friend about it, and he thinks it's a San Francisco area factory option to stop you from rolling backwards at lights. Maybe, but his first guess was that I had a 6 speed sequential shifter. On a 35 year old farm truck with a 232. Huh. I think I like that idea better.
Thoughts?

something ain't right, I've never heard of a San-Fran anti roll option or a six speed option on a 67 glad. More likely the u-joints are bad or your clutch is wasted or both! Sometimes, the pressure plate or flywheel get glazed or even warped from heavy use and heat. Or maybe some bozo didn't tighten the clutch/flywheel bolts in proper sequence or to proper torque. check the u-joints by trying to shake/wiggle the driveshafts. If theres any play, replace 'em. check and adjust your clutch linkage.
If it were me, I'd take an afternoon to tear out the driveshafts, u-joints, x-case and trans and inspect everything. If anything looks worn or bad, replace it. If the pressure plate or flywheel is just heat glazed and not warped, you can buzz it with an angle grinder (this is really ghetto) if you can't afford to have it turned at a machine shop and replace the clutch pack.
If you put a new clutch, you should have the flywheel turned.
Use a floor jack under the case and trans or get a strong buddy to help with the r&r. Let us know how its going, good luck
