View Full Version : Max Tire Size for Daily Driver?

I'm thinking that 33X12.5s are the largest I'd want to have on my daily driver wag because of wheel balance, power robbing weight, etc.. I'm assuming I'll have 4.11 gears for 33s, who know's what for 35's.
But I've never had 33's or 35's on anything I've driven.
Need some opinions.
Thanks...

33s are real easy to get used to. 35 a bit more so. You'll notice the difference with the 33s, but after a while, you'll feel like your sitting on the ground when you drive anything else.

Do you mean what's the biggest tire you can get under a regular Cherokee without suspension lift, or body lift, or both, or without hacking up the wheelwell, or without ruining the wheel bearings, or without regearing both axles, or without carrying an extra-large spare tire in the cargo area?
I have 31x10's on my 76 (wide axle) Chief. Standard 3.54 ratio works great, speedometer is right on, modified the standard carrier to carry the spare under the body, and the tires don't rub.

33's with stock gears in a 91... its gona be gutless ;) As you most likely have 2.73 gears. You ay have 3.31's. I have 3.54's with 33's and its ok, but I have a granny 4sp, so I have plenty of gears. So if you do any hauling or towing, or live in the mountains, your gona want to re-gear to go with 33's.

33s on 3.31 would be doable, but on 2.73 it'd be like riding on a sled, uphill, on dry pavement. Since you're in maryville you'll really be hurting on the hills. If it's a wag, will the 33s even fit? Those back wells are awful small.

Thanks for feedback,
I've got 3.31's wtith a 4" skyjacker syst and 31/10.5 BFGATkos currently, but will change gears when I get new tires. I'm trying to work out a deal for set of J20 HDd44 front and D60 rear but if had had them tommorrow I"m still 6 months away from having everything I want done.
What I want to end up with is my current 4" skyjacker with xj fenderflares from bushwacker and widetrak axles and 33 or 35" tires. I know if I go 35 I'll need more lift, and I think I want to stay at 4". I think with 4" lift and 33's with these flares, I'll have a good proportioned ride.
thanks for feedback

33's wont fit on the 4" without trimming or a body lift with your NT axle.
With J-Truck axles, your gona need trimming just to fit 31's. A rear j-Truck axle is a lot wider then a WT cherokee rear axle. So your gona need a lot of trimming in back to fit them and have any room to flex.

Well assuming you do what all the others say to get the tires under there, a 33 is a good tire for a daily driver, and a 35 will be okay, but you won't want to take it on a long drive. If you need to drive some distance stay with the 33s. If you are going to stay within 60 miles the 35s will be okay. After about and hour some people hate driving with tires that size. Now I know there will be 50 million people posting after this saying "I just went on a cross country trip with my 44s and it was great!" These people are the kind who like the trade off of the bigger tires. If you want a road vehicle stay stock. The bigger the tire the less road handling you will have, to make a long story short. 33s are still good for a daily driver, 35s are pushing it for most people. Whatever you choose just be prepared for the trade offs, and change your driving style accordinly.

Bobbo,
Thanks for info. I'm convinced to stay with 33s when I make the changes.
Stuka,
Thanks for feedback. To put the bushwacker flares I was planning on trimming alot. They stick out 6" so the 6"wider axles plust wider tires should fit well. I haven't really thought about backspacing yet but will when time comes for rims..
Like I said, I"m at least 6 months from having this done, but 33X12.5s sound like the way to go for me...
Thanks

32x11.50s fit good on a 4" lift. -- Just a little rub depending on wheels. I ran 32s on my 88 GW w/4" lift for 4 years on 2.73 gears and it was a drain on power for hills and mountains. Used Lo Range exclusively for off road. Went to 3.73 gears (keep same D44 carriers) and 33x12.50s and had to trim 1.5" from rear fenders and some from the front of the front fenders by the brace. 33s work real good on the road and trails. The change to 3.73 gears made a big difference in power to the wheels...

I run 33X9.50 BFG AT's with a 4" and the fit is fine on the road. Off road any flexing causes contact at the rear wheelwell lips but it's nothing major. I want more gear (3:31's now) but with the mods listed in my sig its really no problem powerwise for a daily driver.

Erik,
I had two samoyeds, had to put our 13 year old male down just before x-mas. Our 12 yr old female is still going strong. Best dogs in the world, except for too much hair...

BTW I just ordered a new set of tires today! 35x12.50-15 procomp x-terrains! I also sold a set to my brother in law for his blazer. They are a great rock and sand tire. Not so hot in the mud, and they are great on-road as well. I got them for 98.00 each HA! God I love my job!

37" in the radial variety would be an acceptable dd tire....just me though
Running 33's with 354's here, not a bad combo but then I'm not real concerned with being quick off the line.
373's coming someday, I think that will be about right and still keep me in the road trip department.
Unless the tires get bigger smile.gif

Sorry you had to put the old boy down.
My guy is just 6, but I don't look forward to the day he has to go. He is an amazing dog.
