This is a question for guys who've done the SOA. I understand there's a trick to welding the spring perches on the differential housing, which is cast. Why? What is the trick? How much does it cost to get somebody to do it? Also, did you grind the bottom of the housing until it was round, or did you get square u-bolts? Thanks

Cast has a high carbon content, which can be trick to get a good weld. I have had no problems with mine... I did mine with nickel rod (they are black) and pre-heated the cast with a torch and then slow-cooled. I have also done the welding on cast with a MIG... I have no problems with either application.
The perch for the cast side must be modified to sit on the arch of the cast properly, and yes.. I 'grooved' the underside to take rounded U-bolts... easy work there.... AFTER you get the perch for the cast side modified, YOU MUST ensure that BOTH perches sit equal distance from the axle tube to get a level side-to-side stance...I built up my axle tube mounted perch with 1/2" plate steel welded to it.
You can always use 2.5" box steel and fab your own perches and make them perfect for each side of the axle.. I wish I did this.
