I went out and took a look at it and this is what I found: Tranny level is good, when I put it into gear nothing. You can hear the tranny engage. When I go to put it back in park the tranny starts to make that weird grinding sound that you get when you try to put it in park before you are fully stopped. There are no big holes in the side of the t-case, this is a good thing.
I had to come back to work so the only thing I did not do yet is take off the inspection plug fo the chain and check it to make sure it is good. I am still just hoping that it slipped out of e-drive. And if it did how to get it back in.

When you put the tranny in Park, does it roll? I´ve heard of the splines in the QT cones getting stripped, so that might explain your symptoms.
Good luck.

Well Todd (River Beast) and I just got back from looking at it and we are both stumped. You can roll it while it is in park http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/confused.gif It is acting like the t-case is in neutral. Can you roll the wag while in park if it is not in e-drive? In theory when it is not locked in e-drive the t-case is puttin all the power to the wheels with the least resistance, which in this case is the front because there is no drive shaft. sound good or am I blowing smoke? HELP ME PLEASE!

HMMMM?
pull the oil fill plug. turn it on and put it in reverse. WITH the brakes on and maybe a car against it just in case.
if its on the output side then the chain/cogs should spin, right?
of they dont but the tranny does. Uh well output shaft or low range unit is bad.pull the unit and check it and the shaft. On mine I noticed alot of wear on the input shaft of the low range unit.
If the chain does spin but no output bingo. either cones or locking mechanism went bad.
Hey at least it didn't EXPLODE like mune did.

Yes, the splines can strip. When I converted my QT to part time, I disassembled the clutch cone assemblies. The splines on the front cone were worn down to little nubs. It would have taken very little for them to strip out completely. If this happened, I think all power would get transferred to the front output which of course would have zero resistance and one would go nowhere. Porkchop, since you ran for some time in e-drive with the front shaft out, possibly the splines on your rear cone have stripped, which could cause your symtoms.

Well here is the latest update: After getting it home I disconnected the rear driveshaft and checked the cones. VERY good shape. it broke after 140 ft lbs, that is all the torq wrench goes to. Also when I put it in gear both the front and rear outputs on the t-case turn. This tells me the chain is good and so is the tranny. I took off the cover over the e-drive mechanisim and I moved the switch by hand and tried it again. As soon as I put it in gear the switch would move back the way it was. No vacum hooked up. So this all leads me to believe that it did in fact slip out of e-drive and the mechanisim to make it all work my be shot. Where, if at all can I find another. I also need to know who has a good diagram on how the whole e-drive mech. works and how the enternals look. I had one once but the computer crashed and I lost it.
Thanks again
Bryant

Well it is a sad day http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif I took off the t-case tonight to have a better look and it looks like I may have stripped the cones. I can hold the front and turn the rear with ease http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif I am thinking that it must have slipped out of edrive and then when I drove it forward the short distance that must have tore up the cones. The wife is mad!!!!! I don't have money to fix it right now so we are down to one vehicle. I am going to have to try to get enough money to buy the adapter for the TH400-D20 from Novak or sell the Jeep. A sad, sad day.

Pork Chop, the TH400/D20 combo was run from late 1965 till 1972. Maybe you can find a stock tailpiece/adapter from a donor rig?

Well I have the cones but they are trashed. I was not able to keep updated on the outcome of your problem as my computer blew a Q-Trac or something, wouldn't go. I do not think I am that good at trouble shooting computers, I had to take it in to get it fixed. (I was told there is no Q-Trac in a computer, go figure) Anyhow how did you make out.
