What mpg do you diesel swapped guys get??? Please post the engine you used, price to swap it in, and transmission, tires, lift, etc... I have looked into a diesel swap and want to know the best combo for mpg and price to swap in. I decided to do this since I don't think I can rig up 2 vw 1.9 tdi engines under the hood like I wanted to :D

I just got my 4bt mounted, with a 46rh and a married 205 case. The cost thus far is $3200. $2500 for a reman 4bt,$700 for a fresh 46 and a resealed 205 case.I still need exhaust, shifter and pay someone to install the vacum(sp) pump(im not opening the motor up)..oh yea,$350 bucks for that dual diaphram pump(I have vacum wipers,m715) Personally,I have been fooling with 6.2/6.5 stuff and had really good results at 1/5 the price.Mpg's..I dont know yet.My 6.2'/5's always got low 20's infull size daily drivers although I have a light foot.My combo is 4bta,120 horse,46rh non lock/205/cucv axles with 4:56 and 11.00-16 Michelin XZL's(bought 6 of them babies).I figure I will have 3x what the truck is worth in parts alone..not including labor.

So you got 20+ with a 6.2 as a dd??? Is that alot of highway or rural??? I live in a rural area and would not exceed 45-55 on a daily basis.

That was mixed rural/2 lane steady. My 1993 mech inj 6.5 turbo(old style pump) would get 22 out on the highway with 3:42's,went 276K miles when I sold it,still pass her on the road 3-4 years later

I got caught up in the Cummins 4bt thing before they really went stupid price wise.I will recoup some expense selling the adapter plate(chevy) that came with the motor and the turbo 400 that was with it also.I bought several parts trucks to get the little stuff I wanted(tach, extra 5sp Getrag,a/c ect)The 6.2 fits better, lighter, cheaper, will turn 3200rpm stock(4bt wont) and the old motors are everywhere.

That last Suburban was a 6.2 with a banks and 3:73's and would see 20 in overdrive..and would spank most DD cummins trucks.I had to start selling off,I saw my satellite pic from the tax map office..it looked like a Jeep explosion from space...

Anybody have mpg figures of diesel engines in an fsj??? Anybody done a nissan sd33(t) swap??? My dad has an ld28 datsun/nissan (sd33's little brother) and wants me to pull it out anyways as the car is useless but the engine is good. Anybody know the mpg for the cj10a tugs, maybe with higher gears for the road. Any other engines people have used that I should be thinking of???

Well, it isnt in a FSJ yet, but all running gear will be swapped over when time allows. Im driving around in my cummins ram right now, bought for $2000, plus $1500 for transmission swap: bone stock 6bt, nv5600 6 spd (0.73? overdrive) with 3.54 gears, 33" tires for now. Lugging 7050lbs around (weighed leaving a scrap yard) im getting 19-23mpg mostly highway, with an hour of stop and go traffic that probably offsets that. ive gotten a best of 25mpg, ive gotten close but i have yet to repeat that number...im hoping to average 25+mpg after i lose a couple thousand lbs or so from the swap.

There used to be an old VW Bug in Mexico that had a 2nd working engine upfront. 2 engines, 8 cylinders and 4 wheel drive! I wish i had a video of that thing

Has anybody got mpg figures for a cj10a with the nissan diesel. Or has anyone swapped an sd33 into an fsj???

You want the SD33T and not the non-turbo version. It gets more power AND better fuel economy. John Meister has his almost done, but his mechanic/painter has health issues so it's taken as long as I have to finish my '84 J10 with 4.0L and AW4 (since before Ouray '02) In S. America and other parts of the world they came stock in the Jtrucks. In the US, only the military, CJ10A and IH Scout came with them ('80 only for the turbo model which is highly sought after)

The ld28 I plan on using has plenty of power in a nissan maxima wagon
(big one) with a slushbox 3 speed auto and still gets 35 mpg average. If my dad lets me use it I will probably add a turbo at some point.

Power wise it would be better suited for an MJ or XJ. I was looking at putting on in my Comanche with the 4 speed auto (just need the bell and converter from the 3 speed to adapt to it AFAIK) The LD bottom end wasn't designed for turbo, but later RD models were (and came factory)

I could live without a turbo, I LOVE diesels and an old 360 has equal power to a diesel of that era, the diesel doesn't suffer from as much hp/tq loss per year so they are pretty equal.

Take a look at the torque curve of the SD28 and compare it to the 360 and 4.2L. It's too low without an O/D and tall gears, then power will suffer.

If your looking for those exagerated diesel MPG quotes, I've got one for ya. A guy that owns a 4x4 shop stated that he has a 4 door JK with a 4BT, 4 speed auto and 37" tires getting 38 mpg:thumbsup: I had to ask him how a stock Jeep Liberty with a CRD 2.8L can only squeeze 28 highway and then he stopped promoting his exagerated MPG tales. There are best case senerios: where a diesel driving down hill at 55mph can get 30 mpg but thats not the real world. A big truck is only going to get approx 20 hw/cty. But that is a lot better than my present 10 mpg in my J20.

So, I had to revive this thread as a few more diesels have been completed. I am really interested in the mpg of the 6.2/6.5 IN a fsj. Also interested in any others including oddballs and such.
Well, a couple years down the road when I get this 8.2 swap going, I'll be sure to let you know :D . I've gotten all my friends excited about it, and they don't even like FSJs!

I have a turbo 6.5 in my Wagoneer. I have 31" tires, 700r4 (with lockup torque converter) and 2.73:1 gears. I get 18-ish in town and best of 24 on the highway.

I have the cummins 12 valve 6bt with the np 4500 and 3:55 gears and get 20 to 25mpg. I have been very pleased with the swap. http://s656.beta.photobucket.com/user/phantomconehead/library/j20

Here is DieselSJ's two year report of his 6.5T Diesel powered Wagoneer
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=98972
To date, my overall mileage is just over 22mpg. My best tank was just a hair over 25, with more than a few at 24+.
Worst tank so far was just over 18, which was mostly short trips taking kids back and forth to school, plus about a hundred miles pulling a 5x8 trailer loaded with 3 dirtbikes.
My typical tank is just over 22mpg.
Just an added bonus, is DieselSJ's report on performance

Rough estimate here is 20-22 with my M715/12valve swap. Using GPS for mileage counts. 42" XL's, 4.56 gears, NV4500.

Intercooled industrial 4bt with 47rh (btw 46rh is the gas version of the diesel 47rh), np208, 3:31, 33 inch tires,4 inch lift, and a roof rack.
Currently i can not use the o/d due to wind resistance from lift and roof rack, low hp(100hp), gearing, and 33 inch tires. But by hand calculating the mileage i'm getting around 22 mpg highway(havent corrected speedo for tires yet).

1972 J4600 checking in around 6,600 lbs
1994 12V, P-Pumped, 3GSK, Fuel plate pushed all the way forward, 4" Turbo back strait pipe, Non-intercooled, Non wasted gated H1C turbo, around 225HP/500ftlbs right now.
Road Ranger RTO-6610 with a 0.8 OD
Dana60/Sterling10.50 with 3.55's on 31" AT's
Best calculated average I have pulled is a hair under 19 mpg
Towing while grossing 18,000 lbs I was averaging 12 mpg
I am working on stuffing an intercooler into the front end this winter, hoping to bring the EGTs down a bit and pick up a little more power. She is getting a little too much fuel right now being I can bury the pyro. Eventually I would like to put a set of 19.5's on the truck and move to a 33" tire, this would bring my RPMs down to about 1900 @ 70 mph. May bump the engine up to about 300hp/600ftlbs eventually. That seems to be a good place to be for what I do with the truck.
