My truck has been making a grinding noise when braking, so I thought perhaps it was rotor/brakes. I replaced the rotor and pads today, and the noise went away for about 2 miles, but as I was going to work it started back up. Now I have this grinding when braking and driving! Not too sure what is causing it. The bearings looked ok when I replaced the rotor. My only other guess has to do with steering because I do have some loose steering issues, but I wouldnt know where to start with that. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

From the 76 TSM: "Worn, loose, or damaged wheel bearings may be confused with axle noise. Wheel bearing noise is usually more noticeable when coasting at lower vehicle speeds. Applying the brakes will usually change wheel bearing noise. Axle noise may be classified as gear or bearing noise. Gear noise is recognized as a whine or high-pitched sound."
Since you have the quadra-trac TC, can you jack up the front and spin the wheels? If so, can they spin freely without grinding? Try grabbing the top and bottom of the tire and see if there's any movement. Sounds to me like wheel bearing damage or adjustment.

in my case, it was the internal axle bearing inside the spindle making the noise. replaced them...noise gone.

sorry i have been busy with school and work. i have no noise when the wheel is moving, by hand or coasting. the noise occurs only when braking or driving. if it is the spindle bearings where can i get a new set, and how difficult is it to replace.

my spindle bearings were so worn, i had to take the spindle to a shop to have them removed. then, i just tapped in the new spindle bearing with a same size socket. i bought the bearing from my local parts store. i would call ahead first to see if they carry them.

ok noise is gone now, not sure why because i havent done anything to it. i had to back out of my driveway and there was no noise in reverse since then the noise is gone. i havent had my truck in reverse since the grinding started could this be connected? i went around the block a couple of times, the past two days and no noise. i havent had my truck in reverse since the grinding started could this be connected? still planning on doing bearings, but would noise go away if it was the bearings? thanks for all of your help guys anymore advice will be appreciated.

I am experiencing the same "on and off" grinding with the front braking. It got so bad this Sunday, I went to the brake shop to see what their opinion was. Once the mechanic got into the Jeep (1990 GW), wouldn't you know it? We could not get the noise to come back. After another 150 mile later, still no grinding. But I know it will return.
What is up with that? Wheel bearings wouldn't have that intermittant problem would they?

Once I thought I had front brake problems (grinding noises), but it was the rear parking mechanism had come loose and was scraping against the hub. going in reverse would re-arrange things for a while but it would start back up after I engaged the parking brake.

is it possible that you have a brake pad out of position? they have small tabs on them that should be bent to keep them tight in the caliper assembly. perhaps you are hearing the pad chatter in the caliper when braking. check to make sure the pads are tight in the caliper, if not, use a small ballpein hammer with the ball side to bend the tabs on the top of the pad to keep the ithgt in the caliper.

Somebody said it might be a falty Power Brake Booster. Would that make a grinding noise when coming to a complete stop?

Be careful. I had a grinding noise in my J-10 that would go away after about a mile. Then one day my left rear axle came out and passed the truck! Tore up stuff bad. Brake shoes and springs and stuff was scattered in the highway. It is challenging to stop these things with 3 wheels on the ground while pulling my cousin's new bass boat.

So BGJeep, I suppose that is a warning to get the wheel bearings replaced?

My pads are loose, so I guess I will have to bang those tabs down. That chatter only occurs when i am driving or coasting it goes away when I apply the brake. Just curious could I also use a larger brake pad I have heard that some GM pads will fit.
Thanks for the help guys. smile.gif
