I think I need a tranny rebuild, what would I expect to pay for a rebuild...???

I got the jeep started and the engine is fine, but the tranny does not engage into any gear... it is also leaking fluid from the front of the Tranny... ??

any ideas as to what the problem is...? could I maybe fix it??? or is this a shop thing... I have never owned a Automatic.. so this is all new to me...!!

Thanks
Dave

Here in Wyo you will pay about 375 for the rebuild if you carry it in, another 50 for a new torque convertor. It's probably leaking out of the front seal. Before you give up and pull it it may be worth dropping the pan, changing the filter, make sure it's full of fluid, etc. Usually when they go out completely the problem is that the clutch pack surfaces have come off of the discs. This happens regularly whenone has sat for a long time. J20

So I could try to put in a new filter and fill it with fluid... how so I check that clutch thing you refering too...

and what do I do about the leak in the front area...?

I have a good TH400 for sale. Just an option if you like. Email me if interested. Crazy_Jeepman@msn.com ;)

I paid $875 for my TH-400 rebuild. It's a little higher than I could've gotten it done for, but they did all the work, and the price includes all new internals and new torque converter.

Like J20 suggested, I'd try changing the filter first.

I may get blasted for this, but before you go through all that stuff make sure your low range is not in "neutral". In other words somewhere between completely engaged and completely disengaged... I say this because of a problem I had last year. I was completely stopped on a freeway and got rear ended by someone that didn't realize traffic had stopped. The impact jarred the low range lever to a mid position. I thought my trans was gone because I couldn't get it to go in any gear. It wasn't until I had it towed to a shop that someone realized what had happened.
It may not be the problem, but it doesn't cost anything to rule it out. smile.gif
To finish the story, other than the problem with the trans all I had for damage was a scuffed hitch ball... the econo car that hit me was seriously messed. :D

Wud, I will give it a try, but that does not help with the fast drip of fluid from the front of the tranny...!!!

Thanks

79FSJ, Yes go ahead and change filter first. You won't be able to check any of the internals until it's torn down. You may just want to drop it out and get it rebuilt. Peace of mind is a good thing. Do double check the transfer shifter and make sure it's in either high or low range. Also, you won't be able to work on the front seal without taking it out either.

I gotta second J20. I know that leak - mine was on a perpetual oil change also. If you wanna fix the leak your already half way to the rebuild when you take it out. I paid 5 bills here in CA for mine as a bench rebuild w/ a T converter. I didn't find out till later that JC Whitney sells a video on rebuilding one for 30$. I would suggest if you have the time, and place to let it(and the truck) sit for a while to go after it yourself. If you get good enough who knows maybe we'll be payin' you the $$$ next time smile.gif

my opinion on this is to make sure the place you bring it to is not run by a bunch of shisters..I had mine rebuilt by the sorry group of people at American Transmission In Jax, Fla.. for about a thousand dollars.. seven thousand miles later it was shot , I broght it back to them they charged me a hundred dollars to disassemble it and tell me it needed a complete rebuild again.. I then told them to put all the parts in a box and I went to pick it up.. I broght it to a good friend of mine whos dad is a "master mechanic" including transmisson repair.. he told me every part in the box was in perfect condition.. and that all I needed was a new stall converter. I paid him $100 for the new stall and $200 to put it back together.. this was over a year ago and it still runs great.
