I've run into yet another problem while rebuilding my engine. I have an '82 360 V8 in a Wagoneer of course. I'm pretty much finished with the buildup but like I said the oil pump is giving me hell. I purchased a new cover and I have an oil pump rebuild kit which includes the gears, spring, pressure release valve, and gasket. I also purchased a new oil pump cover from 4wheel Drive Hardware. It was only $20 so I thought what the hell might as well. Well when I went to put it on I noticed it did not have the oil filter bypass drilled in it. This is the part that sits under the nipple that the oil filter screws on to. I decided to go ahead and use it because I doubted they would send out a bad pump cover. Then I ran into another problem, the pressure release valve would not slide past the threads into its bore. Needless to say by this time I was super aggrivated and I ruined the new pump cover. So I plan on getting a new one, but my question is where? Also has anyone else run into this problems before. I called the Chrylser dealer and they want $125 for the pump cover and I really don't want to spend that much.

Please help me with this as it is keeping me from once again driving my Jeep. I have been without the ole gal for a year on this rebuild. I'm beginning to have withdrawals.

How did you ruin the cover? You can have them surfaced at a machine shop if it's just scored. Are you saying you drilled in to it??

Sounds like you got the wrong rebuild kit to me. I got mine at Advanced cheap enough and it was right if that helps any.

I didn't ruin the timing cover just the pump cover. I ruined it because I thought that maybe the valve just needed a little persuasion and then it got stuck in the threads.

Yep - that's what I was talking about. I see what you are saying. Do you still have he stock one? If either are not too serious scored, go to a machine shop and have them surface it. It costs like $10 or so.

I'm a little confused, tho. You say the relief valve got stuck, right? The plug that goes in the side of the oil pump housing with the spring...? How'd that hurt the oil pump cover? Or am I just lost?
