My flexplate gears that engage the starter are bad. Can I just by a new ring and have it pressed on like a flywheel or is it cheaper/about same price to just buy a totally new flexplate? Not that familiar with automatics.
I have it out and it looks like the ring gear is welded on?
Thanks

There are a couple of used flexplates for sale on ebay right now. You might save yourself some hassle and score one of those. You just have to make sure it is from a Grand Wagoneer as the 360s mounted to the TH400 had a different flexplate.

this is hearsay, but the advice regarding used flex plates is not to as the pita factor is too high and the cost of a new one is less than 100$.iirc, the later mitsu starter uses a different flexplate.
I doubt replacement ring gears are even available for flexplates.
As Andy said the PITA factor with a used one, of having to pull the x-case and trans back out if it's no good is just too high.
Last new one I bought was $60.

I just suffered through this. Do yourself a favor and buy a new one, don't waste time w/ used, once you go through the PITA to drop the tranny you'll be very pleased that you'll never have to do it again. They are only sold as a 1 piece unit. Look locally because even if you get a good deal on Ebay don't forget S&H then wait two weeks.
BTW the tire iron fits the main bolt on the Harmonic balancer so if you get stuck where the gears won't engage just give it a quick wrench and away you go.
Also if you're doing this in the driveway, do yourself a favor and drop the t case from the tranny, it may seem like a lot more week, but what you gain in space behind the motor will more than make up for it.
BIg Job.
Enjoy.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to let you know I went to Advance Auto PArts and got a whole new flexplate for about $47 dollars.
Thanks for the info.

Good job.
Just remember only real men can bench press the tranny and t-case back on the shaft.
Tranny jacks are for wimps!!!

PITA factor usually warrants rear seal replacement at the same time.
