i am in the beginning stages of researching the installation of those cool portal axles from a unimog. anyone out there already done the research, thereby saving my lazy self from doing it? lots of clearance...

you will find lots of good info there.

Ya you have to post very inteligent questions on their board or you will just be kicked off and your question will not be answered. but it is an awsome site for info on just about any think that has 4 wheel drive.

I have access to unimog axles in Europe as surplus pretty cheap, and I thought about installing them in my FSJ but it was too big of a prject for me. Oddball wheel bolt pattern, drum brakes, very high gear ratio, torque tube issues, steering setup issues and extra work to use the stock FSJ leaf springs.

I figured it would be easier to just start with a unimog chassis and cut it down to FSJ wheel base but that was more than I wanted to get into.

If you shop you can get them cheaper than a Dana 60/14 bolt setup, but plan on spending at least $3000 more to get them to work in a FSJ with regular driveshafts and disk brakes. After that you still have a very high gear ratio. To solve that, they use modified Ford 9" diff carriers and gears, but plan on a copuple of more thousand for that.

I bet the aftermarket will come up with some bolt on gear reduction portal hubs for our axles one of these days.
