well, i ran a direct ground from the neg post on the batter to the starter solenoid. so far so good smile.gif. no extreme heat, no smoke, and above all else: NO FIRES!!!

Good, on mine, the wife's and on my dead 87, I ran wires from the Neg post on the battery, to the body of the vehicle, just for that reason. The actual engine to frame ground is on the passenger side motor mount.
