OK, it's real cold here in Denver, but its like this every winter, and this is my third with 'The old gal, Louise'. I put her in 4 two days ago, (NP 229), all is well, checked to see she was in 4 by looking out the door while flooring it on the icy snow. Front tires spin, snow flys into my face..neighbors laugh.

The deal is, she is making a medium howl at revs. Not real pronounced, but there. I am not sure of the exact rpms, but in second at about 30-40. The howl is from the front. It does not seem to get better when warm, but I do think that she is running kool. I have had it in 4 before, of course, and did some light weight weelin this summer and fall, do not recall any howl, but then I was going slow in the mountains. Not tire noise, it is rev only. Normal? Questionable? Stop everything and pray? I did have the tcase, tranny, diffs, completely changed, used tranny fluid in t-case (i think? maybe a quick check...). But, since it is revs, I am thinking tranny and/or motor. I just do not remember this from last winter. Any ideas? I am thinking that the cold tranny is crying out for....what?

I am going to guess the power steering pump. Mine howls when it is cold (sounds like someone is KILLING A DOG) but it does eventualy go away. Maybe yours is just a little more stubborn in the cold. ;)

A-HA! I believe your problem is actually the CV joint in your front drive shaft. Mine did just as you describe, made a howl or "more pronounced" 4wd noise. Could'nt figure it out for awhile. So I pulled the front shaft and replaced the ball and u-joints in the cv and good as new- no noise.

If I remeber right, mine started acting up when the temp changed too. It's worth checking out anyhow.

things always act up when it gets cold. Especially when you have to work on them out in the cold. gotta hate that underneath jeep in a snow drift.

truly, cold weather means fir sure I will ahve to wrench something.

The sound happens even at rest while reving in N. Seems to go away when the unit warms up. IT is a slight howle, like a small dog...

Happens in N and P. Have not tested it by taking out the 4x4, but I will on Sunday.

The pump is newish, but heck, that never stopped louise from complaining!
