My waggy has been running well lately after getting some electrical problems sorted out.

Maybe it has nothing to do with it, but last night I filled up at a gas station (offbrand) that I had never used before. Fifteeen miles later when I got home, she was bucking & hesitating. I went out this AM & she started backfiring when I let off the gas. I'm talking HUGE backfire. Twice, people behind me backed off a hundred yards. I guess they were scared, but it did sound like a shotgun each time. It stalled after the largest backfires, but I could start right back up.

I crammed 6 gallons of Texaco premium in tonight. But I didn't get to drive far to see if it solved the problem.

Could bad gas be the culprit? If not, what..?

Bad gas can cause it to run bad to a extent, but back fires like that make me think the timing is shot. Stick a timing light on it and see what its at just to be safe. If timing gets to far out you can snap a rod/piston. You timing chain may be stretched out and poped a tooth. In which case your valve timing can get messed up as well. I have seen several engines popa few teeth on a timing chain and bend all the intake vales.

It could also be that it is just stretched and not skipped a tooth yet. So I would definately check it, having a timing light on it at idle, then have somebody gas it to rev it up and see if the timing goes wacho.

One thing's for sure, you can probably kiss that power valve good bye.

Thos: sounds like it is backfiring out the exhuast not the carb. if it sounded like a gunshot out the top of the carb i would be jumping out of that thing mighty fast ;)

Hey Soccer, before you spend any repair time, dump two bottles of gas dry into your tank and drive it around a bit. Have had the same thing happen to me.

If the chain streches or jumps a tooth or two you might put a valve into a piston and break it or put the rod through the block, but you won't just break a piston or snap a rod right out of the blue.
But a good call on checking the chain.
