I'm looking at going diesel in the future. Most of the Ford motors are huge and are fairly thirsty. I have a 7.3L PSD and it is massive. way too big to go into a trail jeep.
I'm running a 435/205 behind the 360 now, but I kept the old bell and shift fork in case I could use it later. Will a Ford 435 bolt up with the Ford bell? I'm fairly certain it was behind a 351bb or a 460, the bell is huge. Came out of a 79 F250.
I'm geared at 4.10's with 36's. How will that ratio work on the highway with a 4BT?
******edit****** 4BT swaps says 3-4 shift will suck with 4.10's and 36's and I'd need taller gears. Maybe when I go to Ford 3/4 or 1 ton axles I can get a compatible gear set.
I'd like to go diesel & keep my trans combo/pass drop and use some of the parts I have & I'm just poking around for ideas.
JeepinPete, I'd like to pick your brain, as your Cherokee is comparable (sort of) to my waggy and you are running an Isuzu 4 Cyl right?

I am not as up on Ford bell housings as some, but from what I can gather, the 4BTs with the Ford adapter will bolt up to the Ford small block bellhousings. The 460 doesn't use that pattern. The 435 on the other hand was used in some box vans. I believe all you will need to do is source a small block bell housing for you 435, and then the 4BT with Ford adapter will bolt up.

mmm K, man your quick. thats what i read over on 4bt swaps just now.
I really like the grunt that I have with the trans combo & I'd like to gain mpg's. I'll be brewing my own fuel soon (so yes it will save me lots of money) for both my trucks.
As I posted above, the 3-4 shift will suck with my gear combo and changing the gov springs will help out. what's changing out the gov springs going to do?

All a governor spring does is allow the injection pump to fuel the motor to higher rpms. Anything about 4K, you need to put 60lb valve springs in. The 366 spring is what most do for the VE. There are 38000, 4300, snd 4800 rpm IIRC.

Cool, okay. So this is doable. I just have to come across a Ford delivery van with a 4bt/435 in it...

36" tires with 4.10s in a non OD trans will give you about 2500RPM at 65MPH, too high for a 4BT. You want to be at 1800-1900RPM in your most common speed.

My advice would be to find a transmission with as many gears as you can... And overdrive.
