I'm not running the stock air filter anymore (K&N on an 14" Edelbrock). Since I don't have that crazy tube thing coming from the exhaust manifold, can I take of the heat riser? I've been having space issues with the y-pipe ever since the 401 went in.

From my research, the heat riser is only really necessary in snow cimates, like UT!

Many take them off, however. The pre-heater tube *thing* and the heat riser aid in cold weather running and realy make a difference, IMHO.

When I take mine off, I then have a huge exhaust leak. Got any ideas for covering up the old hole. I don't really want to take the stove pipe off but the part on the manifold is so rusted away the pipe won't stay on anymore.

the attachment to the aluminum duct is long gone on the manifold of my 88. i stretched out the duct a little and jammed it between the manifold and the block

I was going to take my manifolds off, to blast them and paint them with stove paint and replace the gaskets. Can I just have some steel plates welded on the side and top where the stove pipe goes to?

Kong, Ive had my heat riser removed for years now. Had it bypassed with piece of muffler pipe . Like 35$ at muffler shop. I've noticed NO difference at all. And yes it gets cold in Tahoe................phil

Are You talking about heat valve (as per TSM) which is after the exhaust manifold and is a valve in the exhaust pipe or the the stovepipe on the exhaust manifold that duct hot air in the air cleaner.....

Most of us have been removing the flapper in the exhaust pipe without any problems

as for the stovepipe for the air cleaner..... i still have it.... but hey.... in SF i can even start without choke...... Can the other specify Phil you are the reference here

The heat riser is there to aid in vaporizing fuel in the bottom of the pleinum during
cold starts, can you get away without it, sure, run the choke a little longer and a
little harder and it should gloss over the missing heat riser pretty well, you might
have a few more rich missfires while warming up but most likely not enough to notice.

On the stove pipe, dont weld sheet metal to the manifold to make a new tube, rivet
or clamp it on to allow the manifold to move indpendently of the sheet metal
during the hot/cold cycles
