i am starting to get the drive line parts to get the cherokee up and running. i have a d20 and a 300 transfer i can use. which one would you use. it is going behind a 383 sbc/ 700r4 or maby 4l60. it will also have 44's for now unless i stumble across some 60's in the mean time as well as 38/15.5-16.5 ssrs. i will use this mostly as a spair run around town/trail runner.
thanks

sounds like you've got a sweet setup Kenny. I'm by far not a TC guru, just thought your post could use a boost smile.gif
I think the 300 has a lower range than the D20 fwiw.

Personally I would go with a NP208 since they are a Dime a Dozen and bolt up behind the 700R4. If you were to stay with the TH400 then a NP208 or a NP205 would be my choice

300! Lower low range than the 20 (somewhere along the lines of 2.6:1 VS. 2:1) and it's all gear driven-no chain to worry about! No brainer!!

No brainer!!Except for the weak output shaft, though I have no experiance with the D300, its reputation advertised by those that put them between power and big tires is what kept me from using one. While I have done everything imaginable to a NP208 and never had a problem, and the NP205..........Well its just STRONG! LOL.

if you can find a 208 with the correct drop, go for it.

but since you have the d300 on hand, and it'll bolt up to the NP pattern, it's almost a no-brainer. you can get kits to strengthen the ouputs (really the only weak links, since they are aluminum.

if you want a truly strong tcase, look at a NP241. awesomely strong case, good low range.

thanks for the input. i will take a look at a 208. i thought i would stick with what i have on hand now and that would be a 20 or a 300 and there is a 203 in there somewhere.

203 just sucks you do not want that. I was wondering if the D300 even bolts to the 700R4 without any big $$$$ adaptors? I can't think of anyway to make a D20 bolt to a 700R4 either. If you are going to try to use Adaptors to do it then I think you would be better off using what came naturally behind the 700R4.

Well then there is this option, since you have a TH350 version of the NP203, and that will bolt up to the 700R4, so then all you would need is................ THIS!!!!! (http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/doubler.htm) :D :D

i have read about doublers but had not really thought about going that way. i thought it was mostly for the crawlers. i will look into it.

I would go w/ the D300 since you already have it. The only weak link is the rear output, and they make 3/4 ton conversions for it.
I think you'll need an adapter to make it fit the 700r4, or you could always sell the 300 and get a 242 out of a hummer. Tough as nails and they have the 2.6:1 low.

What tailshaft do you have on your tranny?

The D300 has a 23 spline input and a chevy tailshaft has 27 splines (usually). The dana 20 has 10?

You're gonna need adapters or use a chevy x-fer with a 27 spline input
