I Pulled the tranny hump cover in my '67 to mess with the T-case shifer and found something scary. Jeep used a heat shield held in place by chicken wire on the bottom of the tranny cover. The steel wire is wearing into the top of the aluminum case. I have hex-shaped grooves about 1/8" deep in some spots.
I may just fill these with JBWeld and hope for the best but thought this might be worth mentioning to you all.

None of my early T400 rigs have that but they were 69 & 70 so it may have been done away with by then.

I haven't been there yet on my 67, but the 400s on my earlier 74 and 75 both lacked that heat shield you're describing. Is it possible that you got some kind of ha-tech aftermarket performance upgrade from the PO?
Perhaps you ought to put it up on ebay and see what happens
Seriously, I'll check under the hump panel first chance I get

A previous 79 I owned had the same thing. It wore through the case about 1/4" or so.

My '71 pickup has it. Funny, I figured it was something the PO did. Are your cab mounts bad? My truck seemed to have plenty of clearance between the tranny cover and tranny.

My 70' with a Buick has it too.

The '75 and '79 I have don't have this shield. I too thought it was some redneck brewed heat shield, but I started seeing them on junkyard early wags and trucks. Ive already ripped the chicken wire off mine. I don't know how thick the case is on top but it doesn't sound paper thin when I tap on it with a screwdriver. I'll stir up some JB and fill the grooves.
